Hay everyone, I will be visiting Cornell in the end of March. (first time there>__< since I come all the way from canada) therefore, does anyone know how safe it is for a girl to stay from midnight to 5 am in Port Authority Terminal alone? I know the timing is awkward but I will be boarding the earliest Grayhound Bus available. Also, do I need to notify the reception office before I go or I just pop in their door? Thanks very much.

Hey that’s sort of what happened when I visited, and it was my first time traveling there on my own…ok, I don’t think port authority is THE safest place, but I bet there are definitely other people around and security…so you should be fine i think! I wouldn’t carry a lot of stuff with me either! If you’ve pre-ordered your tickets, check with them and they should have it for you when you go there;) hahaha…i think the trauma of getting lost at JFK and finding the correct bus basically outdid all the other stressful stuff that followed…hahaha… it was sooo worth it tho when I got to Cornell, have fun ;)

Well, keep your purse under your coat and keep your coat zipped up - just in case you fall asleep!! And bring some sort of small alarm watch or clock and set it so you don’t miss your bus! I know, I know, you’ll be too excited to sleep, but it really is better to be safe than sorry. Put in a convenient pocket enough money for immediate purchases. You don’t want to be flashing your wallet around. And just be aware. There are people there day and night, so it’s not as if all the lights go out and it’s spooky!!!

If you haven’t already called Cornell to set up the appointment, do it now just to make sure everything runs smoothly for you. Enjoy your visit!

hey, im from nyc and i’ve been around port authority during the early morning hours…there’s a lot of security around, but you should be careful regardless. But are you waiting inside the station the whole time? maybe you should go to a nearby starbucks or something. many places are still open from midnight and on.

I don’t exactly understand why you need to be there overnight. Do you not have a place to stay overnight at Cornell? Can you arrange to stay overnight in the dorms and then call for a cab to take you to the port authority in time for your bus home? Of course, you’d have to call the cab company to check on whether cabs are available at the hour you would need it. Maybe you could reserve a cab the day before for a very early pickup? Not sure if this is feasible, but might be worth checking into.

The Port Authority is the safest place to be. Stay with the crowds. If you want to roam the city, don’t look too much like a tourist otherwise people will approach you for money. Or, you can find a nearby fastfood place/bookstore/department store to stay at. Enjoy.

What part of Canada are you from?

thanks everyone. Now, my heart is much at ease. btw, I am from vancouver and got accepted ED.

I don’t want to scare you, but Port Authority is no fun after midnight. I have been there several times past midnight and its dead. All I can say is bring something to entertain yourself because all the stores in the terminal will be closed. Since it’s march, there won’t be a lot of crowds (which makes it harder to relax). I hope I didn’t scare you, but I don’t want you to show up expecting the station to be busy and alive that late (or should I say early?). Enjoy your visit.
