Going to Dickinson college

I‘ve been offered a merit scholarship of 35,000 dollars to dickinson college which has influenced me to possible commit to that university. I was wondering if it would be possible for me to transfer to another university? And what‘s life like in Dickinson college especially the student life? More specifically for a international student that won‘t really have her drivers license when attending the university.

  1. Is it possible to transfer - of course

  2. Why would you walk in on day one wanting to transfer? That’s a terrible way to have a wonderful four year experience, when you’re already looking to leave. And Dickinson is a fine college. You applied there for a reason - so you had interest in attending and if you do, then go all in and have a great four years!!

  3. You won’t need to drive

Congrats on your offer.

What would you study? Do you have other offers (full pay, I assume)?

Dickinson is a great college, not sure why you’d want to transfer.

It’s a close knit campus, internationally focused, not too “Greek” (socially selective groups of students who get together to party/drink alcohol). Academically challenging. Cute, walkable town with restaurants, an independent cinema, and shops. 4-5 hours to major cities on the East Coast for breaks.

I’m just going to echo that I see Dickinson as a quite desirable college. Obviously it is always personal, but I think they have a nicely balanced academic mix, and you have been offered merit too. They are up to something like a 14% international percentage, which is pretty high, and they have a whole well-resourced program for international students:

And I think their location is actually pretty good by LAC standards–Carlisle is a really classic historic PA town, totally walkable, and Harrisburg is only like half an hour away, and then Philly is less than a 2-hour fast train ride from Harrisburg (my understanding is if you time it right, it is basically as fast as driving direct, which is cool).

So personally, I would see this as a fantastic opportunity for a great college experience. Of course if you hate it and want to transfer, OK, that is always an option. But I think if you give it a fair chance you might actually love it.

I have an offer to GWU but with no scholarship and I only have transferring in the back of my mind just because to calm my nerves.

That’s fine, then. Transferring definitely happens, although I would note it not often happens that people can transfer into a situation as good as what you already have (in terms of cost for quality)! But again if you truly hate it, and yet do well enough, you will likely have options.

Dickinson and GWU are essentially equivalent in terms of academic strengths.
The difference of course is size and location.
So if you are nervous, don’t be (and Gwu full pay will still be there next year if need be).

I was just curious on what the party scene is at Dickinson? Are there a lot of parties? Is it easy to get into? And what is the student life like? Keeping in mind that I am currently an international student living in Germany where the drinking age is low which means partying is a huge thing here and very accessible and lively.

Which is the eight award in your admissions letter or was it separate?

I’m not sure you’re going to get lots of answers about the social scene at Dickinson, it’s a small school so there may not be a lot of specific knowledge. My guess is that it is similar to other LACs, some parties-probably oriented around sports teams and greek life. Greek life is not that big there so it may be pretty low key. I have heard that the bars in Carlisle are extremely strict about under age drinking so I wouldn’t count on them until you are 21. It’s definitely not known as a party school as far as I know, but where there are college students there will be parties

what do you mean?

There are parties because college students will always organize parties  but it’s not a work hard/play hard school where getting drunk is a major part of the weekend after a week of hard work.
As you know, the drinking age is 21 in the US.
