Going to get rescinded

I have a 45% in math after getting a 0 on a test due to some personal issues. What do I do.

is that 45% your final grade?

It’s my progress report but I’m scared that I won’t be able to get it back up to the 80s by the end of the semester

Am I screwed?

look at your particular school’s rescind policy. some are stricter than others. at your university, one B or C may be grounds to rescind a student, although this scenario is unlikely. look into it or call the admissions office asap. its better to find out sooner than later.

Have you talked to your teacher? Have you gone in for extra help? The 45% is scary but this is not your final grade. Go see your teacher and explain to him/her that you need to pass this class and that you will do whatever it takes to get the job done. Even if you end up with a C (which will probably be your only one ever), I doubt your admissions will be rescinded. Breathe and take action rather than freak out.

In my school, progress reports do not show up on any sort of transcript. So I think your first stop is at guidance, to see who will actually see that progress report.

OK, next. You spoke about personal issues. Have they been taken care of? If not, and if they were the cause of that one poor grade, then you have to be concerned about the rest of the grades in that course, and possibly in the rest of your courses.

Have you spoken to the teacher, and explained the personal issues? Is there any chance of a makeup, perhaps averaging the makeup and the original test, anything to bring that grade up? Have you gone to extra help to ensure that you know the material on that test?

A zero, at least in my experience, is typically either the result of cheating or of somehow failing to take the test at all-- it’s rare that a kid who actually takes a test can’t scramble up at least a few points. So it’s possible that a letter of apology might be in order.

Big picture: its still only February, and there’s lots of time until your final transcript goes out. Most senior teachers-- most teachers in general-- are happy to work with kids who have an occasional slip. So go to your teacher-- NOT to ask for a “bump” but to ask what you can do to bring that grade back up to where you both know it should be.

So take a minute and figure this out: What caused the problem? Is it resolved? What can you do, or offer to do, in order to make amends?

the same thing happened to me (kind of). I got a horrible grade on my first math test, 46%. That was my grade in the class, my teacher does not input anything other than tests. My second test I got a 70%. I managed to raise my F up to a D (60%) in time for the 5 week. My school isn’t easy whatsoever, but I still managed to raise my grade. You have time to raise your grades up, i promise. If your personal issue is ongoing, talk to your teacher. Just be sure to study or get tutored. Aim for a C right now because your percentage is low, but I’m sure you’ll be fine. If you’re still failing inbetween the 10 and 15 week grades, that’s when you should be especially concerned.

Go to your GC immediately and talk about the issues. They may be able to help…Like get extended time, hook you up with a tutor, arrange for a make upetc.

Thank you all so much for your help. My issue has not been resolved, but I think it’s getting better. I’ve spoken with my teacher and we’re currently trying to work something out.

Generally, would a C be considered grounds for getting rescinded for a top 20 private university? (Assuming all others grades are As/Bs)

A C should be fine. They expect that kids may slide a little. Try not to worry. If your teacher is working with you, you’ll be ok.
