going to grad school for creative writing

im a senior in high school, and i would say my primary interest is in writing and becoming a novelist. many of the schools i am most interested in, notably McGill University, don’t really offer that many writing classes, so if i went there i would just be an english major. but to go to a decent grad school for writing, how important is it to have already taken creative writing classes. are writing samples usually/always required?

Creative writing samples are always required. In fact, your acceptance hinges on them.

You don’t have to take creative writing classes to get into an MFA program, although it helps, if for no other reason that to receive feedback from an experienced prof.
