We will be there for 5 days (not including travel days) — a 60th birthday present for my husband. Finally booked the hotel today! — a little late, I know, but that’s my M.O. Any advice is appreciated!
If you like nature, Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire are very cool.
Hoover Dam is interesting if you’ve never seen it. It was amazing to us.
Donny and Marie?
We really liked the Neon Museum. It’s a small collection of old neon signs, mostly from famous hotels and casinos. You have to go through with a tour guide and I’d recommend getting your tickets in advance although this time of year it probably isn’t as big of an issue as during high tourist season.
Cirque du soleil, it was amazing.
Stayed in MGM(where the show is) and walked to the window, got a spacial discount, second best seating area.
Top of the world. The food was actually quite good. The view was awesome. We got a little freaked out by the jumpers.
Highly recommend.
Red Rock, Hoover Dam, day trip to the Grand Canyon, Cirque show, Bellagio fountain, fine dining.
You should not miss dining at some of the many outstanding restaurants.
If in season, there are a lot of great swimming pools with bars & food service.
At night, the lights & the atmosphere. Just appreciate Las Vegas for what it is.
Visit the ice bar.
Circue de Soleil shows. Usually there are about six different shows in six different casino hotels. Well worth the time & ticket price.
One show that is great is Human Nature Jukebox at The Venetian. Google their reviews. It is so much fun and everyone stood up to clap and dance at the end. They are a middle aged singing group that used to be the top boy band in Australia in the 90’s and they are performers, and showmen
So many great shows. You will also spend slot of time visiting the different hotels, they are unique.
Take the bus and go to downtown to see the old Vegas and have brunch one morning.
I bet you’ll be playing the slots a little. They are my Pavlov’s dog when I hear them.
We drove to Zion National Park for an overnight from Las Vegas. It was very nice. We have heard the best Cirque show to see is “O.”
At either Red Rock Canyon or Valley of Fire you can look back and see the entire city. That was kind of cool.
Don’t walk a long ways to see the baby lions at MGM… they aren’t there any longer.
I have seen about seven Cirque de Soleil shows. It is very difficult to rank one above the other. Like debating which among H,Y,P,S or MIT is the best school.
Thanks, all, for the excellent suggestions! First time I have crowd-sourced vacation planning. Definitely plan to visit the Hoover Dam and Red Rock, looking to book a Cirque de Soleil show. We are staying at an MGM property, and I think that I can get some discounts. Any restaurants that were especially memorable?

Best views in Vegas and good food and excellent wine (when we ate there).
Many of the hotels/casinos have tourist stuff that is not gambling - going to the top of the “mini” effiel tower, or a gondola ride through “venice”, light shows by the fountains at night, etc. Many have interesting exteriors and interiors that are fun to stroll through. Even the shopping places had stuff like opera singers on the balcony…
KA (Cirque du Soleil) is amazing!
I tagged along with H to a conference he had in Las Vegas. We had an excellent meal (tasting menu) at L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon. It’s expensive, but a great place for a celebration dinner. This was four years years ago—assume it’s still the same.
- Death Valley is also a short ride away.
- And so is Arizona Strip, one of the wildest area of the country, leading to the almost empty and breathtaking northern rim of the Great Canyon. A solid 4x4 is recommended for this one.
- A few state parks in southern Utah, if Zion is too crowded. Or, in Zion, before the main entrance, take the road north toward Kolob Reservoir, plenty of gorgeous and almost empty short hikes along the way.
Another vote for L’Atelier de Robuchon especially if you’re staying at the MGM. It’s been one our favorite restaurants in LV for years. We actually met and spoke with Robuchon there a few times over the years too.
