Good ACT, uneven distribution

So I got a 31 composite in October, but I bombed math. Would elite colleges (ND, Michigan, UVA) see the distribution and like it more than excelling in one section and doing ok in others? The subscores are 33 English, 27 math, 33 science, 32 reading. Any input?

do you have other option?

@annamom other option…? Test score, no. My second best is 28

@as1799 I am sorry I have not clarified…My point was whether you have other option in not using the 31 composite…

Math is the lowest sub score for many students. The recent percentiles for each sub score can be found here:

http://www.act.org/content/dam/act/unsecured/documents/NationalComposite-Ranks.pdf

E33 - 96th percentile
M27 - 88th (a 31 is 96th percentile)
R32 - 94th
S33 - 98th
C31 - 96th

So, while your math score is lower, it isn’t as low as you might think. Whether or not it will be an issue really depends on your intended major. Overall, a C31 is a good score.

As for schools, look at each school’s common data set, section C. You will see that far fewer incoming freshman have a 30 or more in math than for English at most schools (engineering and technology schools excepted). Unfortunately, some schools don’t include any sub score data, ND is one.

When applying to schools just make sure to have a mix of reaches, matches, and safety schools.

My daughter is the same. She has a 31 composite but a 28 math, 27 science but 36 English and 35 reading so very unbalanced. She doesn’t want to study math or science so I’m hoping it won’t impact her greatly.

We will see!

Are you a junior or a senior? If junior keep going. If senior check each target school to see what the last test date is they will accept. Your 31C is solid, but math could be better if you are looking at STEM or anything math related. If not math or STEM related major you are fine.

@my2caligirls I’m a senior and I checked with the early action colleges and the October test date is the latest they’d accept but I had to send the 28C to complete the application

Can you take the December test for RD?

@annamom no because most of my rd deadlines are 12/1. The test would be way too late for consideration. I also don’t think I’ll improve much, if at all. That was my third time taking it
