Good advisors at Brown

The future class of 2015 should check out the CAP program [Curricular Advising Program](<a href=“Seek Advising and Support | The College | Brown University”>Seek Advising and Support | The College | Brown University), which lets them basically choose their advisor.

Past advisors who have received an award for outstanding performance are mentioned on this page: [Romer Advising Prize](http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Dean_of_the_College/faculty/romer_advising_prize.php).

Furthermore, from a recent email:

“Past recipients have included Professors Terry-Morgan(Africana Studies), Chudacoff (History), Pucci (Classics), Tullis (Geological Sciences), Garcia-Coll (Education), Elliot (Sociology), Lincoln (History of Art and Architecture), Vorenberg (History), Green (History), Banchoff (Mathematics), Fischer (Geological Sciences), Hu-DeHart (History & CSREA), Ross Cheit (Political Science), and Sharon Swartz (Bio Med Ecology and Evolutionary Biology).”

Though no Brown advisors are bad, it could be really helpful to seek out the best ones.

Jan Tullis is wonderful and everyone should try to be in her CAP class :-)

Of course, don’t forget that your best advisors at Brown will be your peers!

The Romer Advising Prize is pretty new so there’s not too much to work with, but to any current/past students who are majoring in bio/neur/etc, who would you guys recommend?

We can’t really recommend people right now, because they haven’t released the list of CAP courses for next year yet.

When does the list of CAP courses come out? Who are generally considered the best advisors in CS, math, applied math and physics?

It should come out sometime during the summer - I seem to remember mid-June. Honestly, your freshman advisor doesn’t make that much of a difference - you meet with them once a semester to pick classes, but from what I’ve heard from many of my friends that meeting is really just to make sure you’re doing ok. I would advise only taking a CAP course if you’re interested in the subject; don’t take it just for the advisor.

^Except for Jan Tullis :)

Haha, I love Jan! Geo 22 is a fantastic class though. Definitely take it!

Jan Tullis is an AMAZINGGGGGGGG ADVISER!!! If you decide to CAP her class, though, you MUST take the class. A girl in my advising group dropped it first semester, so she had to get a new adviser…

*Geo 22 will be a CAP course with Jan Tullis and not Karen Fischer Fall 2011, though both are great professors.

^ that might be true of Jan Tullis, but I’m not sure that it holds for all CAP classes. I registered for a CAP/FYS class, but I decided at the last minute that I didn’t want to take it. Still had the same advisor the whole year.

@ LoremIpsum: you can only “choose” your advisor if you are accepted into the CAP course of your choice through the lottery. Unless you have a special connection with a professor who is willing to advise you, you can’t choose someone. Not all professors are first-year advisors; wait until CAP/FYS courses are released, see which classes interest you, and then ask around about professors. Good luck!

(Also, it’s okay if your first year advisor isn’t in your area of interest. Mine wasn’t, and I sought advice from other professors in my department.)

^ Agreed. The CAP with Jan Tullis is the only one I know that’s completely binding.

Joseph pucci has asked me to my advisor since getting in. It’s nice to know that he has been awarded. He wants me o

Well i accidently hit reply but anyways he wanted me to request to him to be my advisor when the semester approaches. He was been very helpful to me during the application period and before so i hope he can be my advisor
