Though no Brown advisors are bad, it could be really helpful to seek out the best ones.

The Romer Advising Prize is pretty new so there’s not too much to work with, but to any current/past students who are majoring in bio/neur/etc, who would you guys recommend?

It should come out sometime during the summer - I seem to remember mid-June. Honestly, your freshman advisor doesn’t make that much of a difference - you meet with them once a semester to pick classes, but from what I’ve heard from many of my friends that meeting is really just to make sure you’re doing ok. I would advise only taking a CAP course if you’re interested in the subject; don’t take it just for the advisor.

Jan Tullis is an AMAZINGGGGGGGG ADVISER!!! If you decide to CAP her class, though, you MUST take the class. A girl in my advising group dropped it first semester, so she had to get a new adviser…

*Geo 22 will be a CAP course with Jan Tullis and not Karen Fischer Fall 2011, though both are great professors.

^ that might be true of Jan Tullis, but I’m not sure that it holds for all CAP classes. I registered for a CAP/FYS class, but I decided at the last minute that I didn’t want to take it. Still had the same advisor the whole year.

@ LoremIpsum: you can only “choose” your advisor if you are accepted into the CAP course of your choice through the lottery. Unless you have a special connection with a professor who is willing to advise you, you can’t choose someone. Not all professors are first-year advisors; wait until CAP/FYS courses are released, see which classes interest you, and then ask around about professors. Good luck!

(Also, it’s okay if your first year advisor isn’t in your area of interest. Mine wasn’t, and I sought advice from other professors in my department.)

Well i accidently hit reply but anyways he wanted me to request to him to be my advisor when the semester approaches. He was been very helpful to me during the application period and before so i hope he can be my advisor
