Good California colleges for a 3.8 weighted GPA

What are some good collages in CA that take a weighted 3.8 on average?

Intended major?
SAT/ACT scores?
California Public schools and/or Privates?
EC’s?
Unweighted GPA?

of Honors/AP/IB or DE courses?

GPA is only one part of a college application. Many schools will accept a weighted GPA of 3.8, but you need to have the complete package for many of these same schools. Competitive test scores, good EC’s and essays.

Answer the questions and posters can steer you in the right direction.

UC Riverside and Merced for sure, and UC Irvine possibly (I know someone with a 3.8 who was accepted to UCI). Outside of the UC system, several CSUs would, including Sonoma, Channel Islands, and others except for Long Beach.

Is that UC/CSU weighted?

No my UC/CSU is a 4.1

In that case, the world (minus UCB, UCLA mayyyybe Cal Poly SLO) is your oyster. Go do well on the ACT and figure out where you wanna go once you see where you’ve gotten in.

Previous posts indicate a 3.67 uw and an SAT of 1180.
Non impacted CSU’s if you are a resident.

with a completed a-g matrix, a 4.1 and competitive SAT/ACT, nearly all programs at nearly all the CA publiics are open to you. UCs LA, B and SD could go either way. And, some programs, like nursing, are a very different story

Your GPA is competitive, but SAT is not for many of the UC’s and Cal poly SLO. The rest of the CSU’s are definitely possible, but Mid-tier UC’s like Davis, Irvine ,Santa Barbara will be tough along with UCSD, UCB and UCLA. Do you plan to retake the SAT?

Also major will play an important part in your chances. SAT will be a problem for STEM related majors. What is your intended major?

Do you have any cost constraints? Have you considered privates like Univ of San Francisco, Univ of San Diego, Univ of Redlands, Univ of the Pacific to name a few.

@Gumbymom my intended major would be sociology which usually is not very impacted.

Although Sociology is not impacted, your SAT is at or below the 25th percentile for all the UC’s except for Santa Cruz, Riverside and Merced. It will definitely help your chances by bumping up the score. Also spend time on your personal insight essays, which could help your chances. For the UC’s, the most important aspects of a Freshman application is GPA, test scores, HS course rigor and essays.

Best of luck.

@Gumbymom would it help more for the CSUs like Calpoly or San Diego State? Thanks!

Your SAT is low for SLO. The average SAT for the College of Liberal Arts where Sociology resides was 1343 last year with an expected 22% acceptance rate. SLO does not publish the average SAT/ACT scores by major.

SLO also uses MCA points instead of eligibility index and 9-11th grades for the GPA calculation. If you want to know how to calculate your MCA points, I can send you a PM.

San Diego state admits by eligibility index and major.

If you took the Redesigned SAT:
(CSU capped weighted GPA X 800) + (SAT Evidence Based Reading & Writing (EBRW) + Math Score) = Eligibility Index
(4.1 x800) + (1180)= 4460 You are competitive for SDSU

@Gumbymom A PM would be amazing to calculate my points thank you!
