I live in the area (why I’m only applying to CA and Middlesex) and applying for 9th grade day as an Asian female.
EC:
Piano - 7-8 years
Soccer - 6 years (plays at club level)
for both of these I’m not especially good but I’m not horrible, again for soccer I’m on a regular team for club no ECNL or NPL
Cross Country - 3 years just on the school team which is not that serious
Grades - almost all A’s I did get one B but it was recently so not on the first term transcripts
I attend a small private school. My school only offers higher classes for math… I am in honors geometry
2nd Place in Regional Middle School Science Fair (6th grade)
3rd Place in State Middle School Science Fair (6th grade)
High Honors at John Hopkins CTY for both verbal and math: attended in person robotics (6th grade) and intro to astronomy (7th grade) and am going to go to game theory this summer
No one can say on this site fs your chances and whether your a good candidate especially since CA and Middlesex got so competitive this year. From the CA open house they said the amount of applicants doubled. But I would say you’re a good applicant.
How good would you say are at piano? I know for Middlesex and CA, Dr. Wetzel and Ms. Dix are wonderful people so if you can talk to them they can recommend you to the admissions committee.
Have you sent an email to the soccer coaches at both schools? I would strongly encourage you to do that. You don’t have to be great - just enjoy playing and want to play in HS.
From what I have heard, neither school had very competitive athletic, especially CA, but they DO like kids that have athletic skill - assuming you meet other criteria - which you clearly do!
My son is applying to MX as a day student and I think his interview was fine, but mine was very boring and was the least engaging one of all the schools we toured. He is a very good based on grades and tests + extracurricular things and they seem very interested in him for a sport. Don’t worry!
Middlesex is quite sporty and requires more sports than any other school I have ever encountered (though I am sure others are its equal out there).
They aren’t that big of a school, so may not have same caliber athletes in some cases, but it is a far sportier vibe than CA. That said I know someone who went there that almost made an olympic team and competed at D1 level!
But to answer your questions you seem like a good candidate and I would think you have a chance, for sure, but at same time they both get TONS of candidates so very hard to know what they candidate pool is this year! If a coach wanted you that would go a long way.
Something basic like Hello Coach X, I recently submitted my application for … and am interested in playing soccer for …
2-3 sentences on how long you’ve been playing, where you play now, club? town? school?, what position you play and that you would like to connect with a call to learn more about how soccer works.
You may need to follow up in a week or 2 if no response. We have had to do that before eventually connecting. If you don’t hear back I don’t think it means anything, it’s just another way to show how you can contribute to the school.
lol, i stand corrected and didn’t mean to imply athletics at MX is in any way poor! i was simply thinking of a set specific sports and comparing to Andover and Deerfield. I can’t edit the post unfortunately!!
