Good chances rule of thumb data

http://www.bu.edu/admissions/apply/class.html

I’ll post this link again since we are starting to come up on apps time and people are asking about chances. Here is BU’s current Freshman profile. Note for all 4 yr BU colleges combined its a 1333 SAT average on the 1600 point scale and ACTs in the 27-31 range for middle 50%. (note CGS has lower stats averages)
It appears some programs like Com and SMG may be on the higher end as are the University Professors Program or 7 yr Medical Program. I assume the ENG kids are expected to have higher MATH scores. On the BU web site you can click on individual BU colleges and some provide their specific ranges.

So if you are in the higher end of the average or in the top 25% (so thats 1410 and over/1600) you are in good shape. Keep in mind many schools post their admissions averages which are always higher than the averages of those that choose to enroll. These stats are for actual attendees so BU admissions averages will be higher. Never assume that if you are in the lower end its not possible since 25% of students get in that way. In a large school 25% on either end, top or bottom, is a large overall number. So that fact that 25% of current Freshman score in the top of the US shows the quality of the student body. And if you aren’t near this ball park theres CGS. Still, admissions are crazy these days and there were posters here last Spring that did not get in despite being at the top of their classes. So show interest in BU and let them know you’ll come if offered admissions if that is really the case.

So I’ll shoot this back up since its the time of yr when “chances” querries escalate in numbers. Good luck to all.

i really want to go to BU and its looking like CGS is the way that its going to happen (SATs not up to snuff) but i think i would feel so inadequate if i went through that program. i would feel so dumb, like im not smart enough to get into the real thing, which is basically what it is, right?

That kind of thinking is dumb. CGS is a good program. You get more teacher / advisor interaction and when it’s done you transfer into one of the other colleges.

Remember that BU has a bunch of colleges. Some people will look down on CGS but some people will make fun of ENG or SHA or CFA or COM people. It’s not a big deal.

“not smart enough”??? Really–c’mom. Be kinder to yourself than that. The average CGS stats are still way above averages in the US and its a chance for kids that may not test so well, are late bloomers, or perhaps focused too much on their social life or activities in HS to get a chance to refocus on academics. You’ll still need to be “good enough” to make it through the last two yrs in a regular BU program. This month’s BU home mailing has a few notable alumnus stories and you can see CGS grads are also Law School grads, etc. so obviously many students take advantage of the system CGS offers. Any kids that “look down” on another because their SAT scores were 100 points lower isn’t worth impressing especially if their additional points were “earned” via numerous test sittings and private tutoring. College is what you make it. There are tons of UNI kids that are remarkable and gifted academically and yet they chose BU over Harvard type schools so choose friends with the right attitude and ignore the others.

Thanks guys. You make me feel good about it.

Howard Stern went to CGS. 'Nuff sed.

I didn’t know that, but hah. (I knew he went to COM)

Yup yup. CGS First.

well then, there is no question. CGS is for me.

haha. Cya there :)

Martin Luther King and Stern are BU grads so just goes to show what a broad range of students there are at BU.

dogs, what a fine summary of the implications of the admission data.

I am not too worried about the stigma assoicated with CGS students; I am worried about grade deflation :(.
