Good Colleges for Undecided Majors

I understand that generally one wants to know a good college for a specific major, however, I would like to know colleges that are friendly to undecided majors. What I mean by “friendly” is that the school allows for declaring majors as late as possible (or not at all), and that the school would allow me to explore many subjects/classes. I just have no idea what to major in, although I am leaning towards a liberal arts education as I am most interested in international relations/history. I am an excellent student 4.15 weighted GPA 3.9 unweighted. Also I am not too concerned about the demographics of the colleges (size, location, ect.). Thanks in advance for any help and let me know if it is even a good idea to go the undecided route.

This should probably be moves to the college search/selection section. Sorry about that

Evergreen State College

Having an Area of Emphasis (major) is optional.

Note that at most schools, students considering humanities or most social studies majors may be able to graduate on time even if they decide their majors by spring of sophomore year (of course, this may mean taking a lot of courses for the major that semester/quarter). However, students considering science, engineering, business, economics, or some other social studies majors typically need to start major requirements early, since there are several semester/quarter long prerequisite chains to complete.

ucbalumnus - Do you know anything about Evergreen? Would love to hear some specifics about the school. Thanks

Brown does not have general requirements, which allows for exploration in the way that you desire. It also has a strong international relations program.

Sorry, don’t know much about Evergreen other than that it has an unusual curriculum.

What is it you’re wanting to know about Evergreen? My older daughter went there as a transfer student and will be graduating in March.

ca-mom2000 We know nothing and need to know everything!! Does your daughter like it…and why? Thanks

Any large state school is going to have a lot of undecided freshman and a lot of course options to explore your interests. You really can’t go wrong with any state school if you don’t know your major yet.

I live in Washington, and have visited the Evergreen State College before. I’m guessing the education there is decent enough, although the acceptance rate is a whopping 94%, and the campus itself isn’t very…glamorous. I feel that someone with your stats should go to a much more prestigious school and be around much more hard-working students.

I’m not saying ESC students aren’t hard-working, but some of the dumbest kids from my high school this year got accepted and are attending next fall…

At Brown you can construct your own undecided major.

SockherMom, my older dd entered Evergreen as a transfer student. She is very happy there. She likes the whole program curriculum and likes the student evaluations in the place of grades, much more like the real world. She was able to spend 7 weeks in Toyko for a program she took her first year.

And students can also design their own major at Evergreen.
