Okay, so I got a computer for graduation. It’s a Toshiba Sattelite C650-S5130…as an incoming college freshman, what is your opinion of this computer? Keeping in mind that I am young and will probably be playing a lot of media on this computer but still need good utility and capacity to handle my school work. If this computer does not work out, I will return it for an HP or something. So other recommendations will be great too. Input from adults and students alike will be helpful and greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

the hardware is somewhat low end, but if all you need is microsoft office, listening to music, using the internet, and watching movies, then it will be fine.

Would the hardware negatively affect me in any way? Are you talking about the windows 7 home edition premium platform? If so, I can install windows 7 student edition…

The Windows 7 is the software on the computer.
Dannyp is talking about the hardware, which are the physical components (RAM, memory, CPU, etc) of the computer. Since the hardware is low-end, it means that they are not very fast components and will be slow for computer-intensive tasks such as video editing or intense gaming. However, for the tasks listed by dannyp, then it is fine.

While your computer is fine, personally, I would upgrade. For regular use it is good, but if you plan to have multiple programs running at once, you will want additional RAM (I would have at least 4, but that is my personal preference). Also, your CPU is technologically outdated. For faster performance, I would get, if at all possible, an i3 or above. Windows 7 home premium (especially as a 64 bit) will work better with a higher-end CPU.

It’s a low-end computer in terms of hardware, but looking at the specs, it’s actually quite decent.

If I were you, I’d keep it and use it until issues come up. For a student, this computer is an excellent choice in the sense that it’s more than powerful enough to do everything you need, plus a bit more for some light gaming. The relatively large screen will be a delight to work with.
