Good East Coast schools that i could get into?

I kind of messed up on my ACT. I got a 27. I’m wondering what are some good schools on the east coast that have strong Eastern European Studies/Russian/Slavic deptartments as well as strong business departments.

Year: Junior
GPA: 3.978
Rank: 1/19
Locale: North Dakota

Difficulty of classes: Well, my school has no AP or IB or Honors, but I’m just taking the most advanced classes that I can think of and this summer I’m going overboard and taking some classes by correspondence.

Schedule for Next Year:
College Calc
English IV
Chem/Physics
Govt./Econ
College English

Business Law
Accounting

Extracurricular Stuff:
Paged at North Dakota Democratic Convention for 3 VERY LONG days.
I play basketball and run track and have won letters and awards.
Superior Actor Award for One-Act Play (highest acting award)
Various awards in Speech
Member of FCCLA (creator of AIDS Awareness website), TATU, and I’m a co-founding member of our FBLA chapter that is starting next year.
I’m active in the community by volunteering for benefit suppers, sandbagging during flooding season, and doing various clean up projects.
HOBY and Farm Bureau Citizenship Seminar
I’m also going to Boy’s State this summer and traveling to Australia and New Zealand as a student ambassador.
SkillsUSA: Health Careers Knowledge Bowl, 2nd place at State
FCCLA: Gold Rating at districts, Silver Rating at State
State Speech

Jobs: I work as a lifeguard. (certified in CPR, first-aid), I work everyday after school as a janitor as well.

Any help is appreciated :)

Emory, maybe.

Corey, my daughter had a 28 on the ACT and was accepted at U. of Chicago, NYU & Barnard; she is also interested in studying Russian or Slavic languages. It looks like you have a lot of strengths, so basically I would recommend that you retake the ACT and focus on your strengths. Definitely consider Chicago, even though it is not east coast – I think that your chances would be very good there.

American and George Washington.

I remember reading something recently where a college admissions officer was saying that it had acceptances from every state except North Dakota. I don’t remember which school it was (maybe Georgetown, Johns Hopkins or Princeton), so you definitely have unique geography working for you.

IF you think you did less than your best on your ACT, take it again and shoot for a 30+. That, compled with your valedictorian status, near-4.0 GPA and the fact you come from ND would make you an appealing candidate for many East Coast schools. Definitely check out the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. They have an excellent Russian/Eastern European studies department.

washington and lee wants someone from N.D.

With a better ACT, you could take a shot at Yale.

take the sat…or retake the act…your scores are holding you back

seems like you have a decent shot at many good schools

a male from north dakota with good grades…you could get into probably every small LAC in the northeast! there are some wonderful schools out there that would love to take you (i.e. vassar, wesleyan, conn college, trinity college, amherst, bowdoin, colgate, bates, colby, middlebury, hamilton, etc)

That would explain the 20 pieces of mail I’ve received from them this year.

You have such an interesting combination between sports and arts that you might enjoy a place such as Bard (NY), Sarah Lawrence (NY), Amherst (MA), Vassar (NY), etc… These are fantastic small liberal arts colleges where you might thrive if you enjoy small classes.

Corey:

Most LACs would want you.

The main problem with LACs is that they are limited when it comes to less popular majors, like Eastern European studies and Russian. Most LACs have fewer than 10 faculty members devoted to those departments. Schools like Chicago, Columbia, Michigan and Yale have over 20 faculty members teaching in those departments. As such, you get a broader range of courses to chose from. Here are links to some Russian/Slavic studies and Languages programs:

east coast school with strong business majors?

penn, nyu, uva, unc, GTown…

Thanks everyone. You have definitely helped me. Now, to study for the ACT for next October!

bump your ACT to at least 30 and you can get into anywhere.

a val from North Dakota…the only way it could be easier is if you were native american.

Uh… Funny that you mention that. I’m 1/8th Native American :stuck_out_tongue: It’s just that my mom’s dad died (he didn’t live with her) and now she can’t get the offical stuff to apply for Native American Tribeship or whatever, so I can’t claim that I am officially Native American on college stuff.

Emory, the best school ever and the only one that really matters.

Huskem, I notice in your listing 11 top northeastern LACs that Williams (arguably the best one) is suspiciously absent. Any reason?
