Anyone have any recommendations for colleges to check out? Currently we are looking at the University of Toledo but are looking to see what else is out there.

Which engineering discipline do you want to study? The University of Akron is known for it’s Chemical Engineering especially in Polymers. Ohio University is developing it’s engineering college and will offer scholarships. I don’t know whether they are GPA dependent or not. U of Cincinnati might be a bit of a reach but it is probably the 3rd best overall engineering school in Ohio. I like your choice of UT. Engineering is a strength there. If your interested in a private university and mechanical engineering you could check out Ohio Northern University. Another in Flint Michigan is Kettering University. There are others such as Youngstown State and Cleveland State. All of which are ABET accredited. Good luck.

Look carefully into what it takes to be accepted into an actual engineering major. A 3.30 is on the low side for engineering applicants. Some schools side-step this a bit by admitting students to the College of Engineering but then they need to apply after a year or two for their actual major. I would be concerned about how a student getting a 3.3 in HS classes will fare when taking primarily math and science classes. OSU has a well respected engineering program, but they follow this admission model.

I agree. OSU is a reach and OP would be competing with students with much higher GPAs assuming he did get accepted. There are a variety of reasons a student might have a HS GPA of 3.3 (which isn’t bad by the way it’s a B+ average). It really depends on how he came about it. All A’s but poor scores in math and science then perhaps engineering might be an issue. Bs or B+s in most of courses then I think he can do fine. I tried to mention schools I felt he might be competitive for.
UT admits directly to their major and requires a co-op. It admits 90+ percent of its applicants so I think UT is a great option. Most of the other schools I mentioned would likely accept him with the possible exception of UC.
Kettering University is an interesting option. It’s private and like UT has a mandatory co-op requirement. It is very small and very STEM and business centric. It used to be the The General Motors Institute. It offers a good stem and business education though at the expense of a classic college experience.
Ohio Northern is a small (about 2700 students) in Ada Ohio. There is not much there except the university but it is a good school which might be more collaborative than others.
The others are Ohio publics with very respectable engineering programs. Miami would probably be a reach but UD might be a consideration.
How much can you afford?
Someone with a 3.3 GPA will likely be rejected by the schools that give the best aid. And his GPA will probably keep him from getting much/any merit money.
The amount that you’ll pay will largely determine where he should apply.
If you’ll pay all costs, then look at UDayton.
He is looking to study computer engineering and we plan to pay all cost. We are also considering checking out RIT
He also has a 1350 sat and is taking it again in June
