Good Enough for NYU

Hi, I’m a junior with about 550 people in my graduating class. Freshmen year I had a girlfriend so I didn’t take school so seriously, therefore, my gpa was a 2.6. I got a 2.8 second semester, which wasn’t much better. Sophomore year I received a 2.8 first semester and a 3.0 second semester. Junior year I received a 3.2 and for my second semester, i plan on quitting lacrosse and dedicating my time to school, so hopefully a 3.8 or 4.0. On my plan test I received a 29, and my predicted act was a 28-32. What’re my chances at NYU? I’m president of DECA(competitive business club), show choir (highly selective), Tutoring program, Golf/lacrosse fresh and sophomore year, volunteer at the hospital for the past 3 years (4 hours once a week), Student board sophomore year, student advisory board junior year, and I’ll hopefully write a killer essay. Is it a reach school, or like way out there.

The “middle 50s” of NYU freshmen …

ACT Composite: 27 - 31

Until you have real scores, it will be hard to say.

What will your cum GPA be for grades 9-11? Schools like an upward trend, but if your overall GPA is low that will hurt you. Your senior year grades won’t help much.

NYU has a cost of attendance of $54k per year. Is that affordable for your family? NYU gives terrible aid, so unless your family can afford this school, you need to consider other schools.

NYC-Reach

Good Luck!

my accumalitive for my junior year is a 3.2 which I understand is pretty low, but I’m
a lot more serious about school, and hopefully I can write about that in my essay. I live in IL and I don’t want to go to a school around here and my sister attends a school
In NY and it sounds great. I want to go into pre med so I’m a little unsure where to go. I’m looking towards east coast but west coast works as well. Also I’d rather not go to a school like idiana, u of I, Iowa, Wisconsin, and such because I feel as though I’d e around the same people I was with in high school. please help me out:)

Oh okay, that makes sense. I was going to say that NYU has a 75% acceptance rate for out-of-state students, but now i understand why. Because they expect the out of state students to pay for the full tuition. Darn, I was hoping for a scholarship, but now that just seems unlikely

NYU isn’t a state school…it’s a private university.

It’s still unlikely–NYU gives aid based on how much they want you, and you would have to be on the low end of their class if admitted.

ETA: in terms of schools, how much of an issue is cost? What can you pay–would you need something close to a full ride to be able to attend? Unfortunately your GPA is a little low for a lot of those automatic merit scholarships, I think.

haavain, that makes sense, and I want to say thanks to everyone for the constructive responses! I unfortunately need close to a full ride. I guess that puts NYU out of the picture. I had a sense that it was possible because I wanted to tell my vision to NYU about what I wanted to do in order to help other, through the field of medicine.
Plus my mom just has brain surgery so it inspired me even more to do well in school and go into medicine. any other suggestions to other schools? schools in either west coast or east coast. thanks!

Collegeboard.com has a college search feature. You put in your stats and it will come up with matches. For merit, you want to be in the upper tier of the school’s stat range.

You might want to look at Ursinus. (Not sure about their science program’s quality, but some others: Seton Hall, Drexel, Temple…)

Temple would be a reach for the OP.

I think you’re looking too far ahead, OP. Lower your standards…
