Good enough to apply for Honors?

D is a rising sophomore. Her GPA is a 3.79. 9 A’s, 3 A-'s, 1 B+, 1 B. Of the 14 courses, 8 are biology/chem/physics/calc courses…with A’s in 4 of those.

So the question is…is this good enough to apply for the honors program and have a good chance of getting accepted (obviously assuming a good teacher recommendation). Or a slim chance and therefore perhaps not worth the effort?

I think after you have been admitted to UNC, you get an invitation to apply to UNC Honors. Its still too early to tell. This may help.

[UNC Honors | Class Profile](http://honorscarolina.unc.edu/the-company-you-keep/class-profile/)

Yes, that is for new students. Current students however that were not invited when admitted can apply after their first or second semesters. So this would be D’s last chance to apply.

I think i misunderstood you. I though she was in high school…

Absolutely worth the effort. My son is a rising sophomore who was accepted to the honors program after his first semester at Carolina. He had/has a 3.8 gpa. He had his FYS professor–who knew him well because of the seminar setting of the FYS–write his recommendation. The application was done online and he had to write a very short explanation of what appealed to him about the honors program. About a month after the deadline, he got an e-mail saying he was accepted. Very little effort involved. If invited, the student then can decide whether to commit. I think you have to take one honors course per semester and keep your gpa at some reasonable level.

I don’t sense that being in the honors program at UNC makes an enormous difference. My son likes it mainly because of the smaller classes it provides. Interestingly though, he found the students in his second semester non-honors FYS more engaged and intellectual than those in his first semester honors FYS. Maybe what this means is that only a small percentage of the many bright kids at UNC bother applying.

Good luck.

Apply. Application is literally a 250 word response to “why do you want to be in honors” and a teacher rec. She’ll likely get in with that GPA and course load.
