Good essay choice?

I’m thinking about writing about a deceased musician, Scatman John, who quite honestly has had a larger impact on my life than one might expect.

He had a speech impediment, just as I had one when I was younger and it kept me back from interacting with other kids. His lyrics which are incredibly encouraging gave me the confidence to talk and be comfortable with myself.

Now, I can talk just fine though! =)

But what do you think about this topic?

Any responses appreciated. Thanks!

What is the specific question? I think you could turn this subject into a great essay, if you have a way with words. One thing to remember: you are going to quote his lyrics, I assume, and they might mean nada to your essay reader.

Most colleges I am applying to give the option of writing on a topic of my choice… Is that a bad idea?

bump…

A topic that will allow you to be personal, detailed, honest and revealing can be a good topic for you, whether or not that topic might work for someone else.

If you feel that the “Scatman John” topic will work in that sense for you, then give it a try and see what you come up with.

Sure -go for it - just be sure that the essay gives a feel for you - how you’ve worked through the issues with speech, what kind of person you are today.

Use Scatman as a starting point to talk about you.
