Good essay topic or sob story?

(I was born in China, then I moved to the states when I was 9. My grandparents currently lives in China still). My grands on my mom’s side were both doctors. They worked hard all their life and never cared about money. One day my grandpa had an accident that required surgery on his spine. The hospital made a mistake that left him permanently paralyzed from the waist down for the past 20-30 years. Now my grandma, along with a nanny, takes care of him everyday. They are the reason that I want to be a doctor. To help and protect the unfortunate like they did.

Here’s the thing: the difference between a moving essay and a sob story mostly depends on the way in which you write it. Just realize that a college essay is about you, not your grandfather. So while you may be writing his importance in your life, make sure that most of the essay is about the impact he has had on you, which should definitely include more than just your goal to be a doctor.

just make sure it’s interesting and honest. there is no such thing as a bad essay topic. any essay topic can be exceptional if you write it well. i think that it is a great essay topic, most people just want to be doctors because of the pay, but you stand out because of this story. another good essay tip is that you should tell a story that only YOU can tell.

nope not a bad essay topic.
i wanna be a plastic surgeon b.c. of my dads burning his hands and stuff.
as long as u write it from the heart and rly tell what uve gained from it, its golden.
GO FOR IT DUDE!

I think it’s a great essay topic. I don’t think it’ll come off as a sob story because there is a point to it (that being the reason why you want to become a doctor).

I agree with Sirensong that the most difficult aspect to this as a topic is making the essay be about you rather than about your hard working family members. Also, from your brief description, it is difficult for me to understand how you becoming a doctor will protect the unfortunate (after all, you are describing an unfortunate happening in the lives of two doctors who weren’t protected by their advanced educations). Also, since your grandparents have lived in a different country than you for the last 9 years or so, it is difficult for me to recognize their impact on your current life.

well I do visit them every 2-3 years

if you can really move the admissions officers, you’ll have a GREAT shot.

idkididk, My concerns are based on your brief description of your topic. I’m sure you can write a complete essay that answers any questions and concerns your readers might have.

overall, a great topic to write an essay on. But I don’t see how the part about the accident and the mistakes of the doctors made you major in Med. other doctor’s mistakes = you want to become a doctor?

i think it makes sense. he’s saying that he wants to be a doctor so he can treat people the right way, not the way those other bad doctors did.

I think this is great because it personally affected you and the way in which you view the world.
Just make sure to focus it on YOU, the ways in which you hope to affect other people, and what your grandparents have inspired in you.

It’s a good topic. Just make sure that if it is a 500 word essay you use about 50 words telling about your Grandfather and 450 words telling about yourself.
