I’ve had a fairly standard flip phone without many gadgets or features since I was twelve. My mom is insisting that I get a new phone with a qwerty keyboard for when I go off to college because I will probably text people more often in college than I do at the moment. The only problem is the particular phone I’d be replacing the flip phone with doesn’t seem great. According to all of the tech review sites I’ve visited, the phone is fairly mediocre and it often freezes, the screen locks at unnecessary times, it has questionable battery life and reception, and it’s cumbersome to text with, which is the whole purpose for getting a new phone in the first place. I’d also be stuck with this particular model because my family got four of these phones for free, and I wouldn’t have any of the benefits associated with having a newer phone, such as a data plan. I’ve actually toyed with my brother’s phone of the same model and wasn’t particularly impressed with it. Am I crazy for preferring my adequate older phone which has no issues other than being a technological antique and lacking a qwerty keyboard? Is it really essential for me to have a phone with a qwerty keyboard to help me text someone a minute faster than I could on my current phone? Wouldn’t the benefits of having a newer phone be null and void if it ends up having the issues people have reported and if it’s not even that good looking? Thanks.

I’d take a reliable phone over one that freezes anyday. Besides, texting with Word isn’t that bad on phones without QWERTY keyboards.

I’ve had the same flip phone for 5 years…Tmobile ended up paying me $10 to have it on a prepaid plan. I’m proof you don’t need to text or have a crazy expensive phone in college. I also know someone who just graduated who also had a similar phone.
