Good Grades in College

I am a first semester freshman and as the semester closes, I am wondering what good grades are in college. I am predicting that I will probably get an A, two A-, and a B+. Is this considered good grades in college? I am hoping to go to grad school.

What field? Which grades are in classes related to your major?

I am a political science major. One of the A- is in a political science class.

I am a Political Science major as well!

“Good” grades don’t really exist in a vacuum; they depend on what your academic and career goals are - for instance, many Poli Sci majors hope to attend law school which happens to demand a pretty high GPA (assuming you want to attend the best possible law school, which you probably should in this market…) If you want to go to law school, you should be aiming for a 4.0, or close to it, every semester.

However, if you have other career goals, things like internships and references tend to matter more than the GPA that appears on your transcript. For instance, if there’s a particular industry you’d like to work in, getting ample experience through internships, volunteer positions, co-ops, and part-time jobs in that field will have much greater bearing on breaking into the industry post-graduation than whether or not you got more A’s than A-'s.

Thanks for the info! I want to keep my options open as I am not exactly sure what I want to do, but I am thinking of grad school in some aspect. I feel that I will have an upward trend in my grades as it was the first semester, and I was still getting used to classes and college.

I am trying to figure out where my grades stand as if these are just average grades or above average and nothing to worry about.

If these grades represent your best, then they are great. If you are asking because you aren’t giving your best effort then maybe not. Do your best, your options will be fine.

Those would be pretty good grades! It mostly depends on what your future goals will be. A 4.0 average is great when you get it but it’s not bad even if you don’t have that. 3.0 give or take average is very acceptable considering how tough college work can get. Sometimes in college you gotta set yourself apart and go into what you really enjoy doing, such as marketing yourself, etc. and notice perfect achievement is not everything if that makes sense! I think you will have good enough grades to get into your major. My major, Business that I want to get to requires at least a 2.5 GPA so I can get into the Business school.

Thanks for the opinions! I feel that I was still getting used to things first semester and I am trying to gauge what is good in college.
