I hope to graduate from my triple major in roughly 2-4 years, and I’m again considering graduate work options. So then:
Nearly every MFA with photography concentration that I’ve found is abysmal. The works that these schools post are incredibly ugly samples of creations by their students.
And I don’t mean ugly like ‘saturn devouring his son,’ I mean downright bad. I’m a pretty good portrait photographer right now, and spending $50,000+ to be taught how to ruin my craft would be a fool’s bargain.
It comes across as though most MFA schools are concerned with boosting the ego of their wealthy students and assisting them in their self-affirmation, rather than training them to create excellent works of art.
The latter is what I want: training. Not kudos, but bold and helpful criticism. Which schools offer such programs?
Note: I know that I don’t need an MFA for this as a career. I’m just considering options; I may want to take a multi-disciplinary approach to aesthetic philosophy. An MFA in my craft could be helpful.
