That other thread, “How Not to Act Old” has gotten me thinking about the music I’ve been listening to lately. While I still plug into a lot of Classic Rock, I do like to get turned on to some of the new stuff coming out.

So here’s a thread where we can let eachother know about good new stuff out there (trying to include a bit of a description too would be helpful).

That way we don’t have to continue to listen to all that stuff we’ve been playing since High School Days!

Ok - so here goes…

Forgot to mention on the other thread that I really like Collective Soul. Good new “rock” that sounds “familiar” - like something I WOULD’VE listened to in HS - haha!

P.S. It’s okay to mention older stuff that you really like - but only if it’s really “worthy” - or maybe sort of obscure.

So… Lay it out there “kids”. What is some “Good Music” that you’ve found?

I’m not a kid, but my D listens to The Black Kids - their stuff sounds like The English Beat. Try “I’m Not Going to Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance”. I also like Kings of Leon, and Rebelution is good reggae.

Kings of Convenience- Reminds you of Simon & Garfunkel. These guys are from Norway and are really good.

Duffy- She sounds like a Dusty Springfield. Great soul pop singer.

Decemberists- Think of Arcade Fire with Jethro Tull- Great band with great stories in the lyrics.

Bright Eyes- The main guy named Coner Oberst and he is considered one of the most talented song writers of our day. Reminds you of Bob Dylan.

Elliot Smith- Although he has been dead for a couple of years, this guy was one talented guy. Should have one an Oscar for his song from Good Will Hunting but was steamrolled by The Titantic. Some of songs sound like John Lennon.

Keane- Amazing British band that uses no guitar.

Guster- Great US pop band. Drummer is does not use drumsticks but plays the drums with his hands.

The Rasmus - Finnish rockband. I kind of enjoy their youtube videos.

Apocolyptica - started off as a Metallica tribute band on cellos, but they’ve branched out. Again catch the youtube videos! They are also Finnish. (Quutamo and Hall of the Mountain King are the videos my younger son likes best.)

Jellyfish (from the 90s, now disbanded): The best power pop you’ve never heard

Neutral Milk Hotel-In the Aeroplane over the Sea: defies genre, you will either love it (I do) or hate it. From the 90s, I just discovered this album and can’t stop listening.

I like Deathcab for Cutie, nice melodies, lead singer has a great voice. You hear them now and then playing at mall stores such as American Eagle or Hollister.

AFI - very powerful although I haven’t heard anything new by them in a few years.

I also like Jet, Story of the Year, the Ataris and a few years back Trapt was one of my favorites.

Alright Audiophile & Redondo Dave - I was hoping you’d spot this thread! Thanks for your posts - b/w the two of you is a lot to listen in to!

Mathmom - my Apocalyptica buddy! I didn’t even think of looking them up on youtube! I think I messed up by buying the 2nd CD first & I haven’t gone back to get the 1st one. Now I can do a discography check & see if I want the whole thing or just download a couple of songs.

Have y’all heard of Jump Little Children? I think they’re semi-local (from Charleston, SC). They have roots in Irish Folk music, so it’s an interesting sound.

My eldest son is into OAR - I haven’t listened to them too much but plan to do more of that soon.

When we lived in Italy we got into one of the big artists over there - Raf. Wonder if he’s got anything on youtube… (His big hit was called “Infinito”. If you want to try something exotc, check it out.

P.S. love Drive Ny Truckers. Looking forward to hearing all the other stuff. Thanks again!

The Cat Empire - from “Down Under”. Also had an opportunity to see them live, and it was the most fun I’ve had in a very long time. Lots of trumpet, fun lyrics, very international flavor. High energy. One of the lead singers is very easy on the eyes.

Jukebox the Ghost, Spoon, White Stripes, Black Keys, Vampire Weekend

Also liked the National @ Sasquatch this spring.
Looking forward to hearing CC recommended Vampire Weekend at the block party, along with Fleet Foxes and Menomena.

Um, I get most of my recommendation from Pearl Jam :)

Along with Kings of Leon who have opened for them quite a bit, although not at shows I had attended
( last year I went to see KOL because I thought Eddie would be on stage- well he was on stage only he was twirling his daughter around and drinking wine- not singing- I gave him the glare that stops grown men in their tracks- but he was immune) still Kings of Leon were fantastic- old school rock

Other musicians they have supported that I enjoy are Kristen Ward ( country/blues), Ben Harper ( folk/rock/reggae), Jeff Fielder ( rock/blues on dobro/banjo/ on slide/steel guitar), & Carrie Akre.

Check out Cold Play. S took his Dad to the Cold Play free concert at Madison Square Garden on Monday (VIVA concert) and they loved it. If you like U2, chances are you will also like Cold Play.

My most recent “discoveries” (of performers that have been at it for more than ten years, as it turns out) have been Deirdre Flint and a group of women songwriter/singers called “Four B i t c h in’ Babes.” Please don’t tell the guys in the man cave, but this is some of the nicest, funniest, most insightful songwriting I’ve heard in a long time.

“Bright Eyes- The main guy named Coner Oberst and he is considered one of the most talented song writers of our day. Reminds you of Bob Dylan.”

What’s funny about this is my 19 yr old D is really into Bob Dylan this summer! And we’re trying to listen to something else to not seem old. But thanks for all the suggestions. I plan on having my D program her old IPOD for me with her music (more than just Dylan) and then she’s going to give me the IPOD and teach me how to use it. She’s inheriting her brother’s IPOD video. I love what she listens to but I can’t learn all the names, so she just doles out the songs to me.

ben folds, ben folds, ben folds. if you play / are into piano, you’ll be blown away, plus he has very creative lyrics and does many different styles of songs.
