Good news for doctoral music students

what a waste. i just had a conversation with my friend… give these scholarships to engineers, people who are going to bring up the school statistics and be able to donate money back to the school in a few years. The average starting salary out of the music school is something like $29,000.

So even more of a reason to give them free tuition.

most music students i know support themselves by private tutoring (which does not happen to pay any tax)
so thats probably the reason as to why the starting salary is so low.

elsijfdl, that’s a very arrogant thing to say . . . And like hXcSTL said, their lower starting salary is exactly WHY they’re given full tuition.

Those $100,000+ positions with the NY Phil/Opera are hard to come by (most symphony members make much less than that).

This is something that the Music School had to do in order to remain competitive in attracting the best doctoral students.
