Good news for my son

Glad to hear this, @DonnaL - congratulations!

Congrats to your son!!! And we miss hearing from you too!

Ya, I’d love be to hear more about you. I’m delighted for your son, even tho he has chosen a tough route. So, are you working and where? How is your health?

That’s so wonderful. As a parent, there is no better feeling than your child being happy, and doing what he loves! What an accomplishment for him.

Thanks for checking in to share the good news. Congratulations!

Big congrats!!!

Great news! Best of luck to him.

So sweet to hear from you and to hear the wonderful news about your son!

@DonnaL Congratulations to your son! As many here know, and as you can likely tell from my user pic, I have lived in Toronto for many years. 3 of my Ds went to U of T and loved it. Let me know when you come visit!

Congratulations to your son @DonnaL!

Wow, that’s awesome! My college junior daughter has similar interests, but she won’t be on that high-flying trajectory.

And yes, Toronto is a wonderful city with very friend people. I chuckled one day on the bus as people were jostling around. I’ve never heard so many people saying, “Sorry!”

Congrats! Your son and D1 are the same age. After SIX years, she is finally going to be awarded her Ph.D in May. It’s been a long road, and she still has her postdoctoral fellowship ahead of her this coming year. So while I’m happy for you, I’m glad I’m no longer in your shoes!

Good luck to your son.

Congratulations to your son!

Does anyone know if 25,000 CAD in annual funding (he was expecting 17,000, but for whatever reason it was 8,000 more than that) is really enough for him to be able to find a place in Toronto in a decent neighborhood – and I have no idea what counts as such! – that’s reasonably close to the campus, and pay his other ordinary living expenses? Is he likely to have to share an apartment? (I know that he’s 28 years old and he’s perfectly capable of figuring all this out for himself, but I can’t help thinking about these things!)

There is nothing more exciting than seeing our kids dreams come true and then spreading their wings! Congratulations! I’ve only been to Toronto once, you will have a wonderful time visiting.

I’ll pile on – congrats to both you and your son, @DonnaL.

congratulations! Had to tune in to a Donna L post !!!

$25000 is probably going to be tough if living without roommates. You’d have to be very lucky to find a good 1bd/ba or studio for less than $1500. They definitely exist, but are just hard to find and require luck especially if you’re following the school year rental cycles. And don’t forget internet, phone, utilities, and transit pass. Sales tax in Ontario is 13%.

Canada does not tax most scholarships/fellowships/bursaries for post-graduate students. You’ll need to check what his tax burden in the US is going to be.

Grad school is the time to learn how to live frugally… and have fun doing it. Toronto is a really dynamic place to be and your son will have no shortage of things to do and new experiences to be had!

DonnaL, so good to hear from you and even better hearing the good news about your son. How exciting for a parent to watch their child find their passion - and a dream grad program to explore it. Congrats to both of you.

I remember your journey, DonnaL and am delighted for your son. Glad you posted here again!
