Now retired but still does film presentations and lectures. One of the best in the field.

David Bordwell exercised the power of objective observation and common sense in a field dominated by intellectual showoffs who were more interested in demonstrating how smart they were than in using their intelligence fruitfully. I have a film degree myself, and was the TA for one of Bordwell’s first (and best) doctoral students – now a long time Professor at Maryland. I read all the semioticians; they were intellectually impressive and utterly fatuous at the same time. Bordwell, on the other hand, simply made sense.
