Good places to eat around Shattuck?

Do you guys know any good places to eat on Shattuck? I live close to the intersection of hearst and shattuck and was wondering what places around here are good to eat. I’ve been to a few already, but I’m too afraid to try other places if its not good. Anyone know any good places? thanks for reading this!

I’m not sure about stuff near Hearst, but there’s plenty further down Shattuck, over near the BART station and Bancroft. Try Angeline’s Lousiana Kitchen–everyone I know says that it has great Southern food. Everyone seems to unanimously love Great China restaurant too, though that’s on Kittredge. If you want cheap $1 ice cream, head over to John’s Ice Cream. For Italian gelato–mmm–try Gelateria Naia.

The other places that I’ve been to on Shattuck were ehh, but I’ll let you know if I check out any other decent restaurants there.

you live on northside. all the better places are there…

There was a fire at Great China a few days ago. It won’t reopen for at least six months…

Oh right, I remember hearing about the fire. Sorry, scratch that then…What is up with all these fires taking out restaurants in Berkeley?

But also, if you’re at Hearst/Shattuck, Gourmet Ghetto isn’t too far away, so just wander a few blocks north up Shattuck and see what’s there. The restaurants there are on the pricier side, but there are places like Cheeseboard that are more affordable. If you ever get a chance, go over to Gregoire, try the potato puffs, and let me know if they’re any good. I really want to go there…time to make a trip over to Shattuck.

Is the Gourmet Ghetto on Euclid and Hearst, by any chance?

Gourmet Ghetto is the block of restaurants and stores centered around Shattuck / Cedar. They include: Barney’s, Chez Panisse, Cheese Board, a couple thai places, etc.

Rick & Ann’s is a great spot across from the Claremont Hotel -always great food !

@excel blue: I’ve asked a few different people (from southside) where the gourmet ghetto was, and they all gave different answers, haha

Try BANGKOK NOODLE! You won’t be disappointed, I promise.

kk thanks for the suggestions everyone!

I loved the Bangkok noodle lunch special. Such a great deal! Thanks UpMagic!!!

Duuuuuude, ARINELLS!!!

Pin Toh (near BART) has pretty good pho…even though it’s a Thai place lol. I heard they hired a Vietnamese chef from a Vietnamese restaurant went out of business…Phil Sliders is also pretty good, $2 a grass-fed beef slider. Angeline’s Kitchen is pretty good, but I think it’s overrated. La Note is pretty good too!!

Going off topic,

I’m really confused about all the Gourmet/Asian Ghettos.

So you were saying the Cheeseboard area is Gourmet Ghetto? And we know the place near Sather Gate as Asian Ghetto. How about the Northgate eateries? I’ve heard people calling that one Gourmet Ghetto or Asian Ghetto too!

I tried Angeline’s Kitchen before, not sure if I ordered the wrong stuff but meh, not too good and on the pricey side. Never stepped in anymore.

Try the Ramen place across McDonald’s on University Ave. They serve fresh made Japanese ramen with flavorful soup (not the cheap dried type in packets that are ready in 3 minutes; Bear Ramen in Asian Ghetto serves the cheap type unfortunately).

Try Triple Rock if you’re of age. I heard they serve good food!

Try searching Chowhound too. I found this;

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/784306

I’ll try Arinells, Pin toh, and maybe I’ll try Angelinas with a friend (if I had one…lol jk).

For the ramen place, what ramen do you recommend I get?

Thanks everybody!

Shattuck/Cedar area where Cheese Board and Chez Panisse is the Gourmet Ghetto in north Berkeley. The Asian Ghetto is the one on Durant on Southside. The little area of Asian restaurants by North Gate is the Northside Asian Ghetto.

I live by Carleton and Shattuck. I can recommend some of the restaurants further down on Telegraph. Pho K&K has decent pho. I really like Pasta Bene for casual Italian that is a pretty good, especially compared to Gypsy’s. Further down on Shattuck, there’s this really good Japanese place; it’s a block away from Berkeley Bowl. It’s a bit pricey but the sushi is really good and the restaurant is always packed.

Man, I haven’t found any good pho places in Berkeley…(then again, I am from a city known for their pho so I’m kind of snobbish in that way)

Brazil Cafe
Barney’s
Masse’s Pastries
Saul’s
Cha Ya
Love at First Bite

I also second Gregoire and Bangkok. Cheeseboard may be overrated, but its bake shop next door is not.
