My niece will be getting her bachelor’s & is considering teaching English in China. Anyone know of any good/great programs? Any programs to look out for? I know the quality of programs varies greatly & want to help steer her toward a reputable one, where they’ll help the kids if there are any problems along the way.
Thanks!

My DD taught at one for a summer session - was paid a stipend of $450, plus full room /board, airfare from LA to CHina and back, and 5 days of a paid holiday. She taught for 3 weeks (no days off), then had the holiday at the end. She said the program was not well run, but she really enjoyed it. It was actually held at a residential campus of a regular boarding school - I’m thinking that was called something like “winnowa” ? Sorry, that’s all I can remember now. I’ll try to ask DD.

Thanks–would love to read experiences by any others as well.

My S2 graduated college in 2006 and has been living at home to earn money. He has taken a month weekend course Teaching English as Second Language. He is now applying to teach in China. One program contacted him , sent a contract and is now negotiating with him. He has applied to others programs as well. There is a lot of info on the Internet including job openings as well as feedback on some programs. Good luck. One good read is River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze by Peter Hessler (a Peace Corps volunteer who taught English). Friends have also recommended the novel, Wild Swans, as providing terrific background info. If all goes well, H & I will probably visit S in China in the fall. I posted earlier as my son has Type 1 diabetes, is considering a remote city which probably has no English speaking medical care providers, and will need to take all his diabetes supplies for a year – yikes.
