If it is a real old dorm and has carpet, the carpet was probably installed to cover flooring with asbestos in it!

Even if the dorm room had carpet, I know my feet would be a whole lot more comfortable still putting a rug down on top - who knows what was on that carpet in the past (and if it truly got cleaned!!)

Abasket…and who knows what will get on your new rug…ew!

True that…which is part of the reason why I usually suggested going with the route of an inexpensive rug (Walmart or something similar) and just telling my S or D to just toss it at the end of the year!

None of the dorm rooms either of my d’s ever lived in at either of their colleges or summer programs were carpeted… so it really depends… I would think most people would want their own brand-new area rug to step onto when they wake up in the morning.

I inherited a rug from Target that a senior had placed in the donation pile at move out my first year. It was a 5x7 and held up fine. I didn’t have a rug my first year on a tile floor, apart from some remnants from my parents living room carpet that they’d been keeping in the garage-- I had a strip next to the bed. Since I spent almost all my time either laying/sitting on the bed or at my desk, I didn’t really notice the lack of carpet.

At one point I spilled a giant glass of apple cider on the carpet, was terrified of ruining it or ruining the hardwood underneath, and I dragged the end of the carpet into the bathtub and used the shower head to rinse all the cider out. Then the rug filled with water, so I had to dry it with my hair dryer-- a little at a time because once it was wet it was too heavy to lift. With the rug folded up into my little bathroom and halfway into the tub, I had to scale the counter and toilet to climb around the rug to get from one end to the other-- as water poured out all over. This was at about 3am. A machine washable rug would have been nice. (Both the rug and the hardwood floor survived.)

I’ve never had a carpeted dorm room and wouldn’t want one. My college BF had carpeted floors and they were gross. I have had only tile and hardwood floors. The wood was great.
