I’d like to buy a 5’X7’ rug and have it shipped to our hotel, right before move-in. Town has Target, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Lowe’s, but I haven’t seen anything on those web sites that I really like and would be a decent quality. I love Pottery Barn rugs, but they are a little on the expensive side. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look? Web sites that list product reviews are really helpful. (There was a nice-looking Target rug, but reviewers complained that it wasn’t soft.)

If there’s a Christmas Tree shop nearby they have nice soft rugs at good prices. However they probably don’t ship. We’ve had good luck with Target rugs - even tho not so soft they are still a good value for a dorm room. Better than bare floor and cheap enough to be easily replaced when filthy.

Bed Bath & Beyond will have bound carpet remnants cut just the right size for dorm rooms for an extremely reasonable price. If there is a BBB nearby, that’s the way I’d go.

In my old house I used four large, washable throw rugs with nonslip backing in our den. We have dogs and it was a great solution for me, because they were washable. I know your student might not care about the condition of the rug, but it’s really a cleaner way to go. You could use tape to stick them together on the back side if you wanted. Also not so bulky to deal with. Those rugs were from Costco.

I have a rug from Target in my family room now that is pretty nice, about 5x8. It has held up quite well as it’s several years old.

Try Home Goods.

We bought some at Ikea. I don’t know if you can order them online.

Being a veteran of many move-ins to dorms and apartments, we have bought rugs from Target, Bed, Bath and Beyond, IKea, Urban Outfitters. I’ve never bought a rug online though.

One rug, Target; another rug, Ikea. Both lasted the four years of college - moved from dorm to apartment - and are still in use.

We don’t have an Ikea, Urban Outfitters, or Home Goods (neither does college town), but it may be worth a trip to to the nearest city to check them out. Ikea and Urban Outfitters will ship. Costco, in the college town, has a rug that would work, but I don’t know if they’ll still have it in a month. Thanks for the good ideas.

OneKingsLane.com

They cycle rugs through often and some are beautiful and will last forever.

Have you checked overstock.com?

Bed, Bath, and Beyond has the carpet remnant type rugs, but they also have pretty decorative rugs as well.

How about a used rug from a garage sale? You can store it in a garage for 2 weeks if there are any issues with possible bugs. You can get some great rugs that way. Also, at moving in day, some schools allow older students to sell used belongings on campus, Harvard has a great Stuff Sale, and they sell everything you can think of at fair prices.

What about looking on Amazon? You can select for size, material, price, etc. Also, Amazon Student, which they’re promoting right now, includes free two-day shipping.

Our kids both had dorms with ok flooring. They never purchased any carpeting, which probably would have been bad for their allergies anyway. Washable area rugs may be more practical and mobile in any case.

A rug that large could be a problem when moving furniture around (my kids never left their dorm furniture in its original configuration), a pain to remove at the end of the school year, and very hard to wash. I hate to say it, but one night of overindulgence by your kid or a roommate or friend and suddenly it becomes imperative to get a rug into the laundry ASAP!

We ordered Rugs from overstock but i was quite unhappy with it.Rugs color was faded. Did not look that attractive or good in room. Was very dull. I decided to sell that rug and went for other site and the rug that they delivered was so nice. I ordered 3 Shag rug and they looked so pretty in my room. I think you can go with Rugsandblinds. very nice collection check it out.

Thinking back to the dorm rooms we toured and I thought most of them were carpeted. Is it common to have tile or concrete floors? I can see the logic behind it.

Target, Kohls or any store of that ilk have rubber backed rugs that can be tossed in a washing machine if not too large. The kitchen and bath section sometimes have a more useful selection, but I’m talking functional, not elegant. Ikea used to have my favorite, cotton loop, rubber backed, but I could not find them when doing a quick look see yesterday evening. Even on a carpet, a rubber backed rug provides some spill protection.

One of my kids had a carpetted room, but I think that was the exception, rather than the norm. MommaJ’s comment on overindulgence reminded me of an episode relayed by my son, where he used the dorm vacuum cleaner to clean up his roommate’s mess. Maybe several small, easily-washed rugs, would be a better way to go.
