My DS is beginning his junior year of HS and is interested in both computer science and economics. Any suggestions as to how he might start compling a list of schools to investigate?
Thanks!
Tell him what your cost constraints are and either run the net price calculator on each proposed school or give him enough information to run the net price calculator on each proposed school.
What are his goals with respect to those possible majors?
For the aspect of his search related to economics, he can access these sources: “Economics Departments at Liberal Arts Colleges” and “US Economics Departments” (IDEAS).
Many schools would be good for both. A few ideas to start…
–First look at constraints you want/need to put on his college search…can be financial, geographic or anything else and immediately knock out any schools that don’t fit your criteria.
–Be realistic about your S’s academic qualifications and look for schools that fit him academically.
–Talk to your S and get an idea of what kind of school he thinks he may want, what is important to him in a college etc. It may be helpful to visit some different types of schools so he can have an idea of what is out there (ex. a LAC, a state flagship, a mid sized college etc.)
–Get your hands on a good college guide book and read (ex. Fiske, Princeton Review, Insiders Guide).
–Talk to the HS guidance counselor and look at Naviance if your HS has it available.
