Every time you look at a by subject/field university world ranking you get the same brand-label colleges listed at the top. Are there any schools in particular that specialise in good Bio-field undergrad programs? You know, instead of these best-at-everything super-schools?
I don’t know much about the undergraduate program, and I don’t know if one would count this as a “best-at-everything super-school”, but UCSD is well-known for it. Job placement after graduation is optimal, as well, with San Diego being a hub for bio-tech and whatnot.
Virtually every traditional college in America has a biology department and I am sure that most are perfectly fine. Many Liberal Arts Colleges stand out. Investigate the options at the public schools in your state. Is the cost of non-resident tuition in other states a concern to your family?
UC San Diego kicks ass at biotech and bioengineering, and its biology programs benefit a lot from that as well. Johns Hopkins and Duke are also really strong. MIT, of course, is a super-school.
A university with a medical school or proximity to hospitals might have more research and volunteering opportunities.
As @LakeWashington says, pretty much every college has a Biology department. Instead of going by rankings, I have a better alternative. First search for schools that are affordable, that you like, and are in areas that you like. Ideally, they should be in an urban area or have a strong research background so you have better access to internship etc. opportunities.
As you research these schools, go on to the Biology department’s website and read up on the faculty, the labs, and the individual research the faculty may have done. That’s what matters and it shows that the faculty is actively involved with research projects.
