HS GPA: 2.6
(Dropped out after 10th grade, got GED)
College GPA: 4.0
College Credits at time of transfer: 65, 4-12 may be considered remedial (paying for my lack of high school education) depending on the institution views it
PTK, working part-time, decent-to-good ECs that are nothing special, have rather… non-standard life story for my essay and mediocre high school work. Strong LoR from community college prof in my major and head of place I volunteer at.

Safeties:
Local LACs and state school

Match:
University of Michigan (IS)

Low Reach:
University of California Berkeley (OOS acceptance rate is the same, apparently)
University of Southern California

Reach:
Oberlin College
Northwestern

High Reach:
Penn
Brown
Columbia GS

Do these sound good? Any others would be good too.

I would say you match for UC Berkeley, + USC. But honestly in my opinion no school should be a reach with a 4.0, but that’s just me. I think you have a respectable shot at every school, but UMich, USC, Berkeley should all match in my opinion.

Northwestern and the Ivies are still reaches given his high school GPA, “decent-to-good” extracurriculars–vague, but still clearly not spectacular, and the transfer admissions rates of the top 10-15 schools.

I think that you’re fine for each of the schools on your list except those which I just mentioned, unless you’re trying to get into a highly competitive major at UC Berkeley (Haas, EECS, etc).

Bio at Berkeley isn’t competitive, but it requires lots of chem and calc to transfer into the major, but I’m a bit behind on Calc (just one semester by transfer) and very much so for Chem (behind by three semesters by transfer).

I figured I could justify missing one semester in a sequence because of my… unusual reasons for screwing up high school, but missing three of chem is rather extreme. Dunno if it’s worth applying to Cal at this point. Thoughts?

And are you trying to say not to apply to NW or the Ivies? I’d rather not waste my time on the applications if I don’t have to. :p
