Good sign?

my parents got an Emil from a school asking for financial info regarding financial aid. is that good, or pretty normal?

It’s normal. Read nothing into it.

Interesting response so far. As skieurope is an expert in this area, I hesitate to post a differing opinion. My thought is that it depends upon the school and that particular school’s procedures and whether or not the school is need blind or need aware.

Agree with @skieurope . Often, the FA office and admission office work on parallel tracks until the end of the process.

My answer could have been different if it were asked in the beginning of March and if the question were, “Are you willing to forgo FA?” But given that the OP was made in January, shortly after the application due date, I’ll stick with my original response

I got excited after getting a similar question for my DS last year about now. Why would they care about our finances if they weren’t interested in admitting him? Then on M10, he got waitlisted (but fortunately got in somewhere else). My guess is that it doesn’t mean much. Practically speaking, they probably don’t yet know who’s getting admitted because they haven’t read all the applications and haven’t had the big meeting yet.

Thank you for sharing this! It’s super helpful context for those of us going through this for the first time. I presume it’s a similar answer for emails from coaches at this point (addressed personally, thanking for prior interest, followed by an update on the team’s performance of late) - would love to read into this, but doubt that they have any special knowledge, right?…

Don’t.

Really guys, there aren’t tea leaves to be read, for the most part. And certainly not on Feb 1. The thing that means something is the link in M10 that directs you to a page where the first word is “Congratulations.”

Appreciate the reality check and wisdom

I wouldn’t read too much into the coach follow-ups either. I’m pretty sure that the coaches get to put in a good word for a student, but they aren’t in the big admissions meeting.

On the other hand, coaches do want their chosen kids to attend the school if they are admitted, so they have every reason to suck up to the applicants. There isn’t much to nudge coaches away from giving false hope.

Which goes back to skieurope’s wisdom: there aren’t tea leave to be read on February 1.

The only thing I would infer is that you haven’t been placed in the “hard deny” pile. But the pool of possible accept/WL pile is much larger. So I wouldn’t get excited just yet. But I think you are still in the (crazy competitive) game.
