Good small schools for a student like me

I am currently a junior interested in fulfilling a biology major with a possible minor in journalism.
I have no specific requirements, except that I don’t want to attend a large school.

Here are my stats:

1800 SAT score
4.39 weighted GPA
Over 75 hours volunteering for the Special Olympics along with an animal shelter and vice-president of a charity-based club.
3 APs this year (I hope to get 5s on all of them) and 6 APs next year.

Rank: In the top 7% of my class.

This list is a good place to start:

[CTCL Members | Colleges That Change Lives](http://www.ctcl.org/colleges/list)

Do you have financial constraints? What can you afford? Any geographic constraints or preferences?

No financial constraints and I would prefer to attend school on the east coast, but it truly does not matter.

I’ll take a look at that. Thank you.

What is your unweighted GPA? What do you want to study? Planning to retake SAT?

We need your unweighted GPA, like BeanTownGirl says. (But I see you want to study bio and journalism).

Take a look at Elon University in NC and at University of Richmond in VA. Google the common data set (section C) for each school to compare your stats to those of admitted students and how the school weights the various factors. Your test scores are a bit low, so if you are a junior, a retake after some practice might be worth the time.

Yes, I was also going to suggest a SAT retake. The biology requirement is easy to fulfill in a small school. I have seen fewer small schools offering an actual journalism major or minor. I just looked in the College Board’s Book of Majors. I see Hampshire (although you should check the course offerings, that might be more strength in tv-type journalism) and Gettysburg as a couple of small options. But you would have to look at their strenght of biology programs. A few that are not really so small are Quinnipiac, American University, and Marist.

So if you really want that journalism minor, you might have to compromise on something. Either pick a slightly larger school (say, 5,000 students). Or you could go the English minor route and try to pick up internships, etc. in the journalism field. However, if biology is your “true” major, it may make more sense to spend your summers & extra time on lab/bio type activities… leaving little time to build journalism skills.
