My neighbor is planning to apply to Brown and feels confident that he will be accepted. He is in the top 10 percent of his high school and has good EC’s. Can’t seem to break 2000 on the SAT’s but has 700’s in the SAT 2 subject tests. He feels certain that his SAT’s will not be a problem when applying to the Ivies. It seemed to me that the Ivies like 2300’s in unhooked applicants. Have I missed something here?

The only way I would feel THAT confident would be if your friend was an URM…

2300s? Yeah right…

I think a 2200 would be perfectly fine to all applicants, except those applying to HYPM, who should have a 2250+ to be really solid. However, your friend with below 2000 should not be that confident. :P

Not breaking the 2000’s definitely seems like a problem, unless he lost most of the points in the writing section. Even then, it’s still pretty low. Unless his “good EC’s” have accumulated multiple state/national level awards and he is a completely well-rounded applicant, I would not feel confident.

yeah, he’s not getting in.

He’s going to have a very difficult if he’s not an underrepresented minority or a recruited athlete.

I’m sure he’s a stellar student, but kids with good EC’s and 2000’s kind of grow on trees.
