Good student planner?

Looking for a planner for my college-freshman son. The typical planners seem to be either monthly or weekly but I think he needs a combination – monthly so he can see the big picture of what he needs to do but weekly or daily so he can plan out his time.

Any suggestions?

My kids use the calendar on their iPhones.

There are many electronic apps, but it can also be easier to have a hard copy as well.
I would suggest a planner that he can put into a three ring notebook. ( assuming thise are still being used  )
I can’t find the name of an 18 mo academic planner that I used to use, but Day Timer and Day Runner sell many different sizes and configurations.

This one is helpful for school assignments.

I just asked my daughter. She says no one uses three ring binders unless they are in HS. She says if you MUST get a paper planner, get something compact enough that it can slip into a backpack pocket or a purse. A month,y one will also show, the whole week, right? So get that.

My kids used their phones. They were able to set up notifications on the iPhone. I’m sure the calendar is available on most smart phones. Since they carry their phones with them constant,y, it’s easy to add things as they come up.

They don’t use notebooks in college anymore?
My D still did, ( she graduated this year)
Where do they keep their notes?
Many people prefer hard copies for note taking, ditto w calendars.

My kid used spiral notebooks…one for each class…and she said that was the norm.

its nice to be able to add pages from class to your notebook, which is much more difficult with a spiral notebook.
However, some classes use Blackboard or similar, and you can access the syllabus and latest assignments from your smart phone.
If it’s running. It drove me crazy that when it was overloaded or down, I still thought it was on my end and kept fiddling with my computer.
They now offer a Blackboard app for mobile.

Agree that 3 ring binders in college would probably only be for special projects or a class that requires you to compile things into a binder. I cannot imagine using a 3 ring binder for a planner.

If you go to your office supply store you’ll find some options. Question: does your son agree he needs a planner or do you think he needs a planner? Cause that’s two different stories.

My 26 year old professional is kind of a dinosaur in her public relations firm because she prefers to use the Franklin Covey planner that does have a 3 ring binder in the middle - but small rings and the planner itself is something like 8 1/2 by 6 - so smallish. She actually asked for a new case for Christmas - those suckers are expensive (but did find a Franklin Covey “seconds” on Amazon). Franklin Covey also has a wirebound less bulky version:

I didn’t use the whole notebook for a planner, but there was an insert for the months of the qtr that I put in the notebook for my main class.( I used to have a desktop application that would print this info out as well) I could make sure that I added all my assignments right away and noted any conflicts while I was still in the classroom, if I waited till " I had time", I was liable to forget something important.

D always liked Blue Sky planners. Can get fairly small size with weekly/month dates (both in same planner) and tabs for months so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for. Easily available at Target and I think Wal-Mart. enough room to write stuff in. Lots of sizes available but the smaller one was good for general backpack/daily use. They run a bit more cost wise but seem to be the most efficient.
