Good Xmas Gift? Tempur Pedic Mattress Topper

D, a high school senior, wants this for Xmas. She says to get the “twin long” version so she can use it next year when she (fingers crossed) is away at college.

Questions for the CC Community:
Has anyone purchased this item and how do they like it?
Does every single college in the universe use “twin long” mattresses?
Since D is petite (5’2") should the mattess topper fit her or her new mattress?

Thanks all

Husband and I have the full mattress: Daughter has the topper. It’s great, very comfortable. It will be easier to make the bed if it is full length…if your daughter, unlike mine, ever makes her bed, that is!

Only thing is…you might want to check the dorm rules at some of the colleges she has applied to. Many of them don’t allow any kind of mattress cover, topper, etc., for fire safety reasons, I guess. I’d hate for you to buy one and then she not be permitted to use it.

I have the 3 inch Mattress Overlay. It works well on top of my regular mattress and I roll it up and take it with me to our summer rental where I sleep on it on its own… I have been very happy with it.

Ss both had them. A regular twin worked fine.

My H and I have a regular Tempur-Pedic mattress for ourselves, and bought a topper to go on the mattress in the guest room (it is a futon, and has tamped down and gotten pretty hard over the years). It works great, and I would imagine would be nice over a dorm mattress. It is surprisingly heavy for its size.

My D borrowed one for her dorm year—it was great–Hers was xtra long, but I would think the regular twin would work as well. And yes…I believe EVERY college in America that has dorms has extra long twin beds. That is not a scientific fact, but my well versed gut!

Some colleges have regular twin beds from what I’ve heard, and even if it is XL, a regular twin mattress topper will be good enough. I also would not buy Tempur-Pedic - a cheaper version of memory foam will be perfectly fine.

All good info – thanks – especially the tip about colleges not allowing certain mattress items (didn’t think of that).

I have two kids in two different colleges. One has XL twin mattress, one doesn’t. And, for the one that doesn’t, each dorm has different size mattresses, as they are in the process of switching! So, wait until you figure out what size mattress the college you choose has!

You don’t need the fancy brand name one but they are great. We bought one for our guest bed at Target last winter. 3" of memory foam with a quilted mattress pad on top. Was about $150 for a Queen. Wanted to get one for our King this year, but the product has changed to 3" but some is less dense foam and some is the “memory” foam. Very nice addition to an aging mattress but not as nice as the previous product.

On another note, the term “memory foam” has always baffled me. Why would one want a cushion or mattress to “remember” where you had pressed down the last time? Sounds like a saggy old chair or worn-out pair of shoes… I want new memory-free foam!

We got S2 the 3" topper from Target last year for Christmas. He lives off campus so got the full size to fit his bed. His old mattress was not in the best shape. The topper gave it new life.

When he lived in the dorm, he had a feather bed topper. It wasn’t extra long even though his bed was. It wasn’t a problem.

Dragonmom – Think of it the other way. It doesn’t remember you…it remembers itself. So instead of wearing into a valley, it returns to its original condition each day. Now, after sleeping on the same Tempur-pedic for more than 13 years, I do notice that there is a tiny bit of dip where I habitually lie. But when you consider how fast even a really good regular mattress ‘dips’, I think we’re doing pretty well. No clinging for dear life to the edge for fear of rolling down into the middle.

I bought a $15 twin size memory foam topper at target for my twin XL bed and it works great, I love it.

I think this is a great idea for a college student. I am looking at the various options on Amazon and it seems that the these range from 2 inches to 4 inches in thickness. Is 4 necessarily better than 2? Other than thickness, what else should I be looking for?

I am not sure if they have them this time of year, but I bought my daughter some sort of mattress topper at Costco in August. She loves it.

When we were looking at these, a friend who has one told me that what matters is the lbs, not just the inches. If I remember correctly, 4 lbs was the minimum she recommended.
