Goodbye, Rhinestone Cowboy...

Glen Campbell and his family were very brave to chronicle his battle with Alzheimers on PBS. You will be Gentle on My Mind…

He did a good job with many Jimmy Webb songs.

Ah,so sad but expected. I have always loved Wichita Lineman in particular.

The great Barbara Cook also died today. Very sad.

So sad. I loved Wichita Lineman too-- the ending is just haunting.

I always watched his variety show when I was younger. How brave to be so public with his struggles with Alzheimers.

My favorite song of his is Gentle On My Mind. I have a CD of his early hits in my car–I played it today.

I went to a Jimmy Webb concert this past year. Glen Campbell’s versions were so much more memorable.

No one sang longing more poignantly like Glen Campbell did in Wichita Lineman.
Every note of that song is right, the vocals perfect.

He was my grandma’s favorite singer. She died many years ago, but I still think of her when I at his songs.
RIP

My sister took one of my sons to a Glen Campbell concert in 2011 when he was visiting her from college. She was hesitant to ask him because he was a young guy so asked me what I thought. I told her that he was a true entertainer and I thought my son would appreciate that, even if the music was not what he usually listened to. They had a wonderful, memorable night having dinner in the city and then seeing Glen Campbell, on his Farewell Tour. Very poignant performance.

He and his family were brave & wonderful for going public. He was wonderfully talented and seemed to have a very loving family.

The documentary was very poignant and in reading the obit in today’s NYTIMES I didn’t realize that he had been a studio musician for many other singers as well as for a limited time part of The Beach Boys

The excellent documentary “The Wrecking Crew” is about those studio musicians:

We watched it about a year ago, and it prompted us to watch Campbell’s “I’ll be Me.” His death was not unexpected, but so sad to lose such an amazing talent.

My sister and son emailed about seeing Glen Campbell together (it was actually in May, 2012, not 2011). My son remarked how “neat” it had been to see him and how “nice” it was to have his kids onstage with him. It was a very memorable and poignant show, given that they went in knowing his situation.
