Google and Penn

After speaking at Penn’s commencement yesterday, Google CEO Eric Schmidt took questions from the press, and said the following about Penn:

During his commencement address, Schmidt said that his industry owes a “profound” debt to Penn because of the invention of ENIAC in 1946. He went on to say that literally every modern digital device (computer, mobile phone, etc.) descends from the principles invented at Penn, and that “this really is the center of my world.” He continued that 63 years later, 250 Penn alums work at Google, and he further commented:

For what it’s worth. :)

Thanks, 45 Percenter. Not just for this post but for your constant Penn spirit. I’m 95% sure I’m still going to Penn next year. I’m fine with the fact that Penn comes with a higher price tag because opportunities are worth investing in.

But Google is a terrible place to work. Haven’t you read all the employee letters that were online?

Ugh. He’s just saying that (blah blah blah…best place in the world). I mean he has to say that; what he really thinks can be anyone’s guess. I dont think Google will hire you solely on your Penn degree, though a Penn degree will help. Google still wants the best employees whether those employees are from Penn or Columbia.

^ Don’t be so negative and cynical–you’re not even a freshman yet. Sheesh!

Nobody–including Schmidt–said that Google only hires from Penn, or will hire someone based solely on his/her Penn degree. But the facts speak for themselves (Google hires more interns from Wharton than any other non-engineering school, etc.), and Penn is clearly a top recruiting target for Google.

I’ve heard plenty of commencement addresses in my time, and there’s certainly lots of chaff in them, but there’s usually also a bit of wheat (if you’re not too cynical to hear it! ).

What year are you, 45 Percenter? You’ve been so supportive and you’re right: I can’t get my masters in romance languages at Stanford- that’s an opportunity that only comes at Penn. So, I have decided to stick with Penn and I can’t wait.
