"Google Gets Into Princeton"

The Google Book Library Project announced another big win today with the pending addition of the Princeton University library. Princeton has agreed to let Google digitize over one million public domain books.

Princeton is one of the oldest and most historic universities in the country with a library steeped in American history. It is home to six million printed works, five million manuscripts, and two million non-print items. Once Google has completed its work at Princeton, users will be able to view, browse, read, and download public domain materials.

“Generations of Princeton librarians have devoted themselves to building a remarkable collection of books in thousands of subjects and dozens of languages,” University Librarian Karin Trainer said in a statement today. “Having the portion of that collection not covered by copyright available online will make it easier for Princeton students and faculty to do research, and joining the Google partnership allows us to share our collection with researchers worldwide, a step very much in keeping with the University’s unofficial motto of Princeton in the nation’s service and in the service of all nations.”

Princeton University is the 12th library to join the Google Library Project, right on the heels of The University of Texas at Austin, which joined the program on January 19. It seems opposition from the Open Content Alliance, which opposes the project, and other copyright suits are hardly slowing Google down.

cool .

the daughter of the google ceo is in the class of 2010

a legacy, as her father, CEO eric schmidt, is princeton '76. another connection: president tilghman serves on google’s board, her “work” for which (attending a dozen or so meetings a year) has earned her an estimated two mil in stock options.

The class of 2009, actually, I think. And is known for being a down-to-earth person.

For all Princeton’s connections to Google, I’m surprised they were only the twelfth college to join the project.

actually, they were the eighth US college to do so, after the alma maters of two of the company’s founders (stanford and michigan), harvard, and four state schools. and note that negotiation of the partnership was an 18-month process, thanks in part to copyright concerns on princeton’s end.
