googlemap friendly gps

We had a bunch of stuff stolen from our vehicle a few weeks ago, including our GPS. I’d like to replace it with a GPS that has the capability to use google maps. This is what I mean: Before I go to an unknown place, I often go to google maps and figure out generally what roads I’d like to take. For instance, when I go to SW Virginia to visit my son, I always go west on route 78 through PA and then 81 South. My garmin seemed to prefer that I take the turnpike and then I-95, so for several miles, I would hear, “re-calculating” as I kept going in the direction I wanted to go. Or when I go someplace, I’ll know most of the roads in between, but just need help with the local neighborhood roads. No problem muting her, but then I have to remember to turn her back on at the right time.

I would love to be able to figure out my route and send it to the GPS and then if there is construction or an accident and I go off-route, the GPS would put me back on my pre-chosen route. Several times I would be going someplace, following the GPS’s direction only to realize that she (ours had a female voice) was taking us on roads I wanted to avoid.

Does anyone know a GPS that will allow you to select your route via google maps or something like that? Suggestions for GPS’s that you’ve been happy with would be fine too.

kath…isn’t there an application for an IPhone that does what you want? It’s like a GPS in the IPhone but uses Google maps.

Yes, there is but way too hard to look at while driving. I think that’s what got me to thinking about having that info on the GPS. The GPS gives you turn by turn verbal directions as well as a visual.
