GOOP - Marketing Genius or Gaga Gwinnie?

I confess, I do not know much about Gwyneth Paltrow’s brand, Goop, however, I do understand it is a highly successful lifestyle brand, and is probably for people with $ to burn!! (joke!)
A few months ago, I read that her recent launch of a candle that had the scent of ‘My Vagina’ sold out in seconds!!! As I was opening my computer this morning, an ad. for her latest scented candle popped up ‘This Smells Like My Orgasm’! Now I have to ask - who buys this stuff?? Gag(a) gifts? Sickos? The Perfectly Perfect hostess?

I cannot see me burning cash for anything that smells like Gwyneth Paltrow!

A long while ago I looked up Goop to see what all the hype was about. I spent a few minutes looking around and knew it was not for me.

My daughters love her and GOOP products–I don’t get it. There was a GOOP pop-up store on Nantucket last year, but I think it’s not returning. Don’t know why. One daughter went in and said she prefered the GOOP store in Boston.

Edited- what I use for sun protection is Supergoop. It’s different from Paltrow’s Goop. The SuperGoop line is excellent skin care.

Uh oh @MomofWildChild !! Consumer confusion… Supergoop maker registered the mark long before GP started her site, so no Super sunblocks for GP.

Could you imagine gifting, or receiving, a candle that smells like My Vagina?! LOL!

I’m guessing most of us here - moms of a certain age - aren’t the target audience.

Had never heard of it before this thread.

This is the only Goop I have heard of: https://goophandcleaner.com/ My husband has used it forever so there’s always some with the cleaning supplies.

Only a “marketing genius” if you consider fraud and taking money from dumb wealthy status-chasing consumers to be genius.

When recently challenged on their claims that their candles could “‘ease OCD, anxiety, and depression’”, Goop responded that they " didn’t try to substantiate its claims" despite a legal settlement that they must.

Too bad the FDA is too busy these days… they have the power and can shut down such snake oil peddlers.

There is no shortage of idiots willing to part with their money. Take Supreme… what the…? Slap a “supreme” on already overpriced Gucci crap and charge even more?

I’m not very familiar with the brand.

Re: the candles. I can see that sort of thing being very popular as a gift for bachelorette parties, birthdays, girls nights, and it’s the sort thing some people would post on Snapchat & Instagram for a good laugh — so, good marketing if it creates a buzz?

Both. The USA idolizes celebrity and wealth. So if somebody is rich and well known, people will automatically assume that these people are also wise, knowledgeable, intelligent, and talented in everything else under the sun. So if a person is a highly paid movie star, there will be thousands who will listen to every bit of nonsense which they blurt out as though it were the wisdom of the ages.

So Paltrow can blurt out meaningless, incoherent nonsense as a reason for people to buy her useless garbage, and people will buy it. Worse, they are selling stuff which is useless and often harmful, not to mention overpriced.

Moreover, their social and environmental performative activism is convincing people that an environmentally responsible lifestyle is unaffordable for anybody but the very wealthy.

Almost none of their health claims are verified or tested, and many of them have been proven to be flat out wrong. Their environmental practices are so expensive as to be unsustainable, and actually hamper the development of a true affordable environmentally sustainable economy.

It is bovine excrement being sold in a $500 biodegradable box. Actually, looking at their products, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were selling a product made from exactly that (from African Zebu cattle, raised by Masai herders using traditional methods, of course).
