Does anyone have any suggestions for “gospel” type broadway songs for Male voice? Thanks.

Run Freedom Run from Urinetow
That’s What He Said from Parade
The Chain Gang Song from Parade
One of the tenor songs from Songs for a New World
Some of the songs from Myths and Hyms
Glory from Floyd Collins

I know some of these songs are JRB, which is forbidden in audtions, but not knowing why you want these songs they may work. Good Luck!

srw :Thanks for the info. My S has some of those songs you mentioned on his list and I think he has the music for most of them. The song is for an audition so I know he will have to look at the music for the JRB stuff. I just wanted to make sure he was on the right track with “gospel” type songs.

The tenor song from SFANW is Flying Home. On the Deck of A Spanish Sailing Ship is also gospel-y but relies somewhat on the ensemble back-up singers to feel musically complete.

A Rumblin’ and A Rollin’ from Parade.

Muddy Water and Free at Last from Big River.

Let It Sing from Violet (a GREAT one).

Freedom’s Child and River Jordan from A Civil War.

I Know Where I’ve Been from Hairspray (sung by a woman in the show, but not gender-specific).

Thanks. I think he has the song from Parade. Is the music from Violet available?

Violet is not commercially available but the score circulates a lot. I’m sure one of your son’s friends has it - many young MT performers are “score collectors.” :)

Thanks. He does know someone who has it, and he is going to CCM in the fall where they did the show a few years back. I would think they still have a copy covered in dust somewhere. Thanks for the help.
