Got accepted at Virginia Tech

Accepted to Virginia Tech. for Mech. Engineering. How is their program? Is it generous in giving aid to OOS?

Did you complete all of your financial aid applications to VT on time?

Are you instate for any of the public universities on this list?

If you haven’t already done so, run the net price calculator for Virginia Tech - that should give you your answer.

US citizen living outside The US. Did complete al financial aid applications on time. Belong to very low income level.

So…what did the net price calculator on the VT website tell you?

Accepted to UMass Amherst for engineering.

UMass isn’t going to give financial aid to an OOS student.

Actually they gave almost $25000 in grant and aid including $12000 Chancellor scholarship

So…are any of these colleges affordable for your family?

I told my son that we can borrow for the remaining amount for the fist year. But I don’t know about the remaining years. Is it easier to get more aid in the subsequent years for the engineering majors?

No! it is harder to get money after the first year - for all majors.

@Parayil

Do you want your son to have to transfer after his freshman year because you can’t afford the costs? Please plan ahead at least a little. If you don’t think you will be able to fund this school after year one…look for a more affordable option.

I disagree that it is harder to get money for later years, especially for an engineer. The student has better internship/co-op options, there are department scholarships, there are scholarships offered by corprations. There are also ways to cut down own expenses by living off campus or getting a job. Everything needs to be considered and I wouldn’t count on $20k in new scholaships or Financial aid, but there is some money available through grants and work.

There is some money. There is certainly not more opportunity after the HS senior year. Even for engineering majors.

This family is looking to borrow to pay for,the first year. They are not sure they can pay for subsequent years…at all. “Some” money is not what they will need in subsequent years. It sounds like they wil need lots of money. And even for engineering majors…lots of money isn’t likely to happen.

EXCEPT…did this student apply anywhere with a Co-op program? If the family can get through the first two years…and then the student works every other term until he graduates, he might be able to earn enough to cover a good chunk of his costs.

It looks like UAB is still accepting applications for merit aid. https://www.uab.edu/students/paying-for-uab/scholarships/item/570-act-gpa-based-scholarships

OP, it may be better to take a gap year and rework the school list so you can find the best merit aid options.

Got accepted to UWisconsin Madison

UW isn’t going to give money to an OOSer, most likely. UMass does sometimes, UW rarely.

For engineering ABET accreditation matters. UAH still accepts applications as well.

Acceptance without ability to afford the school is not worth much.
