Got Credit for Some Reason??

So I’m an incoming freshmen and my DARS says that I got 1.7 general units for getting a 3 on AP Computer Science A last year. Problem is, according to the College of Engineering Student Handbook, only a 4 or 5 on the test yields any units.

I called Berkeley about the issue and the lady just pushed it off as “You got the credit according to DARS so its fine” without really taking note of the inconsistency. Not complaining about the free 1.7 units, but anyone know what’s going on? Any problem with this?

DARS is as good as sars…

there is only one place to find the facts…

bearfacts…

I’m not sure, but perhaps the handbook was referring to credit for your major. If you get a 4 or 5 on the test, you get actual CS credit towards your engineering degree.

That’s different from Berkeley’s policy of giving GENERAL credit for all AP scores of 3 or above. This is probably what you got, and the only thing it does is improve your standing for telebears.

@singh2010: sorry can you explain a bit further? The entry in the handbook says:

Computer Science AP
Score: 4 or 5 on the “A” test
UC BERKELEY UNITS: 1.3 units
REQUIREMENT FULFILLED: None

I’m currently a Bioengineering major in COE if that helps Where did you find that Berkeley gives general credit to all AP scores 3 or above regardless of test? Because that would make sense haha

@crowslayer91: where would I find this information on bearfacts? Isn’t that linked to DARS lol

I’m not sure where I learned that, but I’ve always been under the impression that Berkeley gives “general” credits for all scores of 3 and above. I’ve thought that for a long time. Maybe someone else can find a source.

[University of California - AP credits](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/counselors/ap-credits/index.html)

Apparently it’s a system-wide policy.

You get units AP CS A, but they are useless for fulfilling any major requirements.

The now-discontinued AP CS AB could be used to fulfill CS 61B (but not CS 61A).

Note that the bottom of the page linked above says that the AP units will be removed if you take a course that duplicates the AP test. So you should not count on those AP CS A units staying there (for class standing or to make the 120 units for graduation) if you take CS courses.

DARS could be off too. For instance, I have 7 particular courses that satisfy the 7-breadth requirements if associated with the correct category (course A to A&L, course B to HS, etc.). However, because some breadths may account for one of several breadth-requirements, DARS threw my classes in whatever, now claiming that I haven’t satisfied my Philosophy & Values. I had to contact the Office of Registrars to manually fix the DARS and ensure I satisfied the 7-.

UPDATE:

just got a reply from my advisor and it seems like “i still receive units toward UC Berkeley totals, but it does not clear any College subject credit. All AP credits go towards the 120 units minimum, but not all clear students major requirements.”

Not to beat a dead horse but I’m just curious about the system. So its basically saying that I received university-wide credit (1.3 units) but I don’t get to skip out on any classes. It’s just that the information in the student handbook said I needed a 4 to get ANY units at all – so essentially it was incorrect right?

Entry from handbook:

Computer Science AP
Score: 4 or 5 on the “A” test
UC BERKELEY UNITS: 1.3 units
REQUIREMENT FULFILLED: None

Thanks all.
