So, I received my first F last semester in a general science class. Overall, I did great in the class when it came to everything else quizes, midterm, exams but the professor had three movie assignments that we had to look for online buy, watch and review… and I failed to do that. I didn’t think it was a big deal at first but apparently, those movie assignments were worth a lot more points compared to anything else resulting in me failing the class. I take responsibility for it, I got caught up…no excuses. Now, I spoke to my advisor and she said that I can re-take the class and it will bring up my gpa and replace the grade. However, the F will always show up in record.
This is affecting me a lot mentally, I could have done a lot better especially knowing that I actually did a good job in everything else. But, I can’t go back in time… so I am re-taking the class soon. So, what now? I know… suck it up, learn from my mistake and re-take the class.
How will this affect my chances in transferring to a university (PSU)/career opportunities? It already brought down my gpa by a lot but my goal is to bring up my gpa by this summer, so I am not too worried about that just yet… more worried about having that single F in record.
In response to your email, if you re-take the science class for the Spring 2018 semester and earn a higher grade, the ‘F’ grade will always remain on your student academic record, BUT will replace the ‘F’ grade and GPA calculation.
Sometimes students have trouble adjusting to school.
Now you know to look at the syllabus to see how many points assignments have and the relative weighting.
Even easier…Do All the Assignments!
You will retake the class and presumably get a much better grade.
Colleges will see that you have passed that class and are continuing to do well. The course will not be reflected in your GPA.
If you continue to do well in classes it won’t have much of an effect.
I really struggled with a math class after I transferred to university. I was doing really well on the homeworks, but so was everybody else. I typically scored near the average on the midterms and went to every single discussion section. There was even a discussion section that was poorly attended because everybody was busy studying for a midterm in the co-requisite class, but I really wanted access to all review material. Despite all my efforts, I earned a D-. I was so so crushed. I wanted to cry. I thought scoring near the average and having (almost) perfect homework scores would at least get me a C, but I bombed the final pretty spectacularly. It’s hard at the university level. No professor is the same as another. I had one that stated he doesn’t care about grades and claimed that he’s never given a student an F grade - 80% get a B- or better. Another professor (that I had unfortunately) likes to curve his class in a way that meant more F’s than A’s - 35% of the class typically fails. One bad grade should not totally define you. I think attempting to re-take the class will look good on your part. It shows you didn’t just give up and accept the bad grade; you want to do better.
