Got Questions about Davidson?

One week until I leave! I’ll let you all know about my experiences as they happen, if it will help :)

Does Davidson have a good business/economics program? I’m planning on majoring in something non-science, and not very math related.

Absolutely. We have an excellent Economics major and a Business concentration. I’m in the same boat where I don’t want to major in something science or math-related. All of our departments are extremely strong, but I’ve heard lots of really good things about economics. You will have to take 3 math and science courses total (at least 1 math and 1 lab science, the other you can choose), but after that you don’t need to.

I just had my first day of Davidson classes  I’m loving this place. If you all have questions about student life and such, I can answer them in much more depth and with facts and experiences rather than speculation.

Ok, I have MISSED your posts on the Davidson board and I’m glad you’re back! I don’t have any specific questions for you right now but I will; I’m beginning to work on my application and I’m sure some stuff will come up. I am glad you’re back on the board and I’ve been checking for your return! :)

I’m actually checking a lot and waiting for posts  so if anyone has something to ask, I’ll definitely respond as quickly as I can.

On the app, it asks for: ‘list the books you’ve read THIS YEAR and denote the ones you’ve read for school with an asterisk’.

How many books need to be on that list? I’ve heard that they rotate that part of the app to professors who scan the number and scan the list and if the number isn’t high enough or the list isn’t varied enough, they ‘don’t like that’.

When it comes time for application, before November 15, I’m prolly gonna have 9 books down there, read this year, with 3 asterisked for school (so, I’ve read 6 books this year for fun).

thanks!

the kitesurfer.

There really is no set “number” of books. What I did was at the top put a sentence-long summary and explanation. I listed my school books first and put an asterisk by them. Then I listed the books I read for pleasure. 9 books is a great number. Remember, you cannot make anything up. You must be completely truthful, as Davidson is seriously governed by the Honor Code. On my pleasure list, I’m not going to lie, I put down a couple of Harry Potter books I had read, and the Pretty Little Liars series that I finished in 2 days :stuck_out_tongue: I also had a couple of books that were intellectually stimulating, but you do NOT need to be reading Plato for fun to get into Davidson (cause I didn’t…)

and that’s one of the things I really like about the school. I think that elevates everyone’s game a good bit, actually.

Hey how is school? I know it’s going to get hard so push!

thanks, you’re awesome, truly,

the ks.

Just to add to the book list question, I wrote down Seventeen magazine and the Twilight series… so I don’t think they will discriminate based on the type of books you read… then again I also listed some more intellectual or cultural books that I read. and dancepsychlove is right, there is no magic number! It’s just another way to get to know applicants better! :)

School is great, thanks for asking! I really like my professors and classes, and the people here are amazing! I’ve been able to get involved already (freshman flickerball, dance team tryouts on Sunday, possible tour guide, and I might be choreographing a dance for dance ensemble!!) FunkyFairy and I chilled today and watched Dance Moms…it was fun :stuck_out_tongue: I’ve gotten to meet so many different people, and everyone has been really friendly. Of course it has been a big change, and adjusting is a bit difficult, but I really think I’m going to be happy here.

Hi dancepsychlove and/or Funky Fairy!

I was just wondering what your opinion(s) are on overnight visits at Davidson. I’m seriously considering applying Early Decision this fall, and I signed up to do Discover Davidson but all the overnight spots are full. Do you think it’s better to do Discover Davidson and not stay overnight, or to stay overnight another time, attend a class and maybe have an interview?

The main thing I want to do is get a feel for how Davidson really is, not just what the admissions officers say. I loved everything they said already, of course, and felt like Davidson was the right school for me when I stepped on campus–but if I’m applying early I want to be 110% sure.

P.S. This is a little random, but how “big” would you say fraternity life is on campus? You mentioned that partying was pretty popular. Is a lot of that involved with the Greek system? This may be a dumb question, but are a lot of frat boys jerks like they are in the movies?

Thank you so much!!! I’m really looking forward to visiting Davidson, no matter which way I do it.

Hi! I actually never did Discover Davidson so I can’t tell you how helpful it is. But overnights are usually pretty good. Make the decision that you think will help you see the campus in more depth because we have a lot to offer :)

In terms of frat parties, there are tons of them but everyone is welcome. Of course there are some jerk frat guys like any place, but honestly I’ve met so many more nice and friendly people than rude. You don’t have to be Greek to go to the parties at F/Patterson Court.

Also, you all may have read stuff about First Night Down…that doesn’t exist anymore. I’ve been to 2 nights of frat parties so far.

I did an overnight during discover davidson because I was considering applying early decision, and it was pretty helpful. However, I would say the actual events of discover davidson were not as important. But an overnight visit will definitely help you get a feel for how things go and the personalities of people, more so then a bunch of lectures on academics or admissions! I’m wondering about how they cap the overnight guests because I signed up to host prospies (prospective students) but haven’t heard anything. I’ll email and see what’s going on!

And I also have gone to two frat parties…I think what’s nice is the parties are definitely available but if you’re concerned about not having stuff to do if you don’t want to go to parties, that is definitely not the case! Tonight I went to a trivia night thing at the outpost which is near the frats but isn’t a frat or eating house. But there were parties out there! So there are definite options! and I haven’t run into any “typical” frat boy jerks yet, so that’s a good sign :)

Thank you so much for answering all of my questions! I think I’ll visit campus and do an overnight on my own. Your answers were very helpful, and I’m so glad you decided to help out other people on College Confidential.

Thanks again for the info on Davidson!

Hey all-
Just wanted to let you know that I am currently in the process of starting a blog about life at Davidson- the good, the bad, and everything in between. Stay tuned  I’ll share the link when I get it ready.

Does Davidson have a specific way I can check to see if they have received my recommendations and transcript? A lot of other colleges have usernames and passwords for that, but I cannot find anything like that on the website. Should I just email them to make sure they received it? Just wanted to make sure first. =)

Yup, you can definitely email or call the admissions office and they will be able to tell you! It is unfortunate that davidson doesn’t have an online system but the folks in admissions are very friendly and can definitely give you an update on your file! :)

I’m a direct descendant of Colonel William Lee Davidson, he is my 8th generation great grandfather on my dad’s side. Could that play as a major factor in my application? My tests and GPA is not quite up to par with the Davidson standard, but I got a 6 (which is near perfect out of 7) on my IB HL Visual Arts Exam and I plan on studying Art History.

Does Davidson only accept all around smarties? Or is excelling in one area good enough to be admitted, when put in comparison to requested major?

I would say that being a direct descendant will not mean you are an automatic acceptance or rejection… but it could help set your application from others if you use it to your advantage. I’m not sure, however, how you could work it into your application appropriately.

As far as if Davidson looks for well-roundedness I would say they look for strength of your coursework first… So they’re going to look at your application and see if you have been challenging yourself with hard classes even if it is not in art. You do not have to get 100% in all classes obviously, but they want to see that you can handle harder classes even if its not something that is your main interest. Primarily because when you get here, there are certain classes or types of classes that everyone is going to have to take. However, make sure your application shows that you are truly interested in art history through your extracurriculars or even other interests shown through extracurriculars because they will want to see that you are filling your time with activities.

I would recommend looking into the Pepper Visual Arts scholarship, by the way, if you are interested in art! :)

Hope that helps!

Would a liberal, rock guitarist, with strong interest in science and the visual arts fit in at Davidson? Really liked the campus and the tour but I’m not the frat type and I don’t drink.
