Got rejected from doing an honors course in Calculus 3. Should I ask them the reason?

<p>I applied for an honors course and I got rejected. </p>

<p>I have a 4.0 CGPA. Obviously never got anything less than an A on a math test. Been part of the CC math team. It baffles me that I was rejected</p>

<p>You can ask why.</p>

<p>Some possible reasons why:<br>

  • the course is full - did you apply early enough?
  • the course is full because there is actually a wait list</p>

<p>IMHO, how can it hurt you if you ask why? </p>

<p>Does Calc 3 Honors at your university require that you have been in Calc 2 Honors? Were you in Calc 2 Honors? There is no harm in asking about course placement as long as you are respectful. Not only is it reasonable to ask, if done politely and to the right person, it may enable you to find out about other useful alternatives.</p>

<p>Unbelievable. I asked them and their E-mail reply was “This is a high level course. We felt other applicants were stronger”.</p>

<p>There were 5 slots and 7 applicants. I have a higher GPA than all of them and had higher grades in Calc 2 and 1 than at least two of them. </p>

<p>All that hard work and the basically tell me “Sorry but this is for the big boys”. To hell with it…</p>

<p>Ask your calc II teacher if he/she will figure out what the problem is? They may be able to get a more honest answer. Now if they won’t go to bat for you, then perhaps you didn’t do as well as you thought you did in their class or you’re just surrounded by dicks. </p>

<p>I don’t know. I’m over it now but I got A’s on all my tests. How did I not do as good… </p>

<p>Did they ask on the application about other things (other than your Calc 1 grades)? It would not be unusual to factor in other things (standardized test scores SAT etc, college specific aptitude tests, previous participation in math contests). Assuming that it wasn’t a simple screwup, then it is always possible that they weighed other things on the application in favor of those two candidates who had lower grades. Could be a teacher recommendation thing as well for one or two of them? Strange. </p>

<p>It’s possible that some of these other students have taken previous math honors sections, and have expressed a greater interest in math in general. That could make a difference. </p>

<p>That said, it certainly doesn’t hurt to ask. </p>
