Hey guys I applied to most of my colleges 2 weeks ago right in time for the early action deadlines. One of the smaller colleges I applied to already sent a letter to me and apparently I got accepted?? Ok this is a super weird. It was literally like less than two weeks after I sent my application… I applied the Saturday before November 1st and I already heard back a few nights ago… Anyway.
I applied for Computer Science, they said they weren’t able to admit me into the computer science program because of the “Academic Requirements of the Program”, but I got accepted into the school of Liberal arts and sciences… So I basically got into the school of CS but not CS… Also I got a dean’s scholarship of $40,000 ($10,000 per year for four years). Is this good? Not many people in my family have went to college and I don’t want to ask my dean such a simple question. Thanks!
A few comments:
– It is not unusual to be given merit aid at a college.
–Some colleges do give admissions decisions quickly so that is not unheard of.
–It sounds like you did not get into your desired major of CS. You need to understand if it would be possible to make an internal transfer into CS once you are at the school and, if so, what the requirements would be to do so.
–You should feel free to ask your dean anything as you move through the process. His/her job is to help you.
The first point of contact before you enroll should be your admissions counselor, not the dean.
You will have time to hear back from all your colleges before you decide. Be sure to calculate the total cost of attendance at each school, don’t just look at the size of your scholarship. A 10,000 scholarship at a school that costs 30,000 per year is worth more than the same amount at a school that costs 50,000 per year.
Oh…I may be mistaken…in our HS the guidance counselors are called deans. When I said dean in my earlier post I was meaning your guidance counselor not the dean of the college.
By dean I meant college help person at the school. They said also that they have assigned me a DEAN at the college that will help me select the right courses to later be admitted into the CS program so it SEEMS like they wanted me but maybe it filled up too quick? I was one of the last ones to apply before Nov 1st (deadline).
