Got the extra-long sheets...now what about the mattress pad???

Hey all freshman parents to be and experienced college shoppers…

Bought two sets extra long sheets this weekend - one at BBB and a REALLY nice set at TJ Maxx - what about mattress pads? Haven’t seen any extra long. Do the regular ones fit? Or do most go without???

I suppose the thru the college sheets place has them, but I"d really rather not have to order anything thru them…

Any suggestions?

Oops, I just saw another similar thread below here - sorry. Still would appreciate suggestions not online for mattress pads - I didn’t see them at my BBB.

I have seen mattress pads at my BBB in extra long. Maybe try to get one online, if your store doesn’t have them.

A regular mattress pad that is extra deep will fit. A regular twin might fit, but a deep mattress regular twin will definitely fit. You might want to look at BB^B, they will have twin extra-long mattress pads

My D notoriously has the comfiest bed in the dorm. I got her a thin quilted mattress pad, extra long from BB&B, just to keep out the cooties, over that she has a fiberbed, like a featherbed but of man-made materials and cheaper, then all cotton sheets. Her bed at home has an egg crate, but she thinks the fiberbed is much more comfortable. It is more expensive than an egg crate, but she will use it for 4 years, and I thought she would toss the egg crate each year, although she’s used the one at home for several years.

Might be a little early still for the extra long mattress pads

I actually love the fiberbed idea - at least something to make the bed more comfy. D has a superhigh cushy mattress at home I see no reason why she shouldn’t sleep comfortably at college - I’m going to try to research fiberbed types and see if I can find something affordable…thank you.

I know that JC Penny sells them online, so you might be able to find them in your local store.

Yup, a “deep” twin mattress pad will fit just fine.

BBB in my area did have them in stock – as of about a week ago. I would suggest trying there again. This may be considered a seasonal item (because who else would buy it except for a student starting college), and your local store simply may not have put it out yet.

I just bought an XL Twin mattress pad at TJ Maxx this weekend.

I agree, I got mine in early August from BBB. If you can’t find one by early August, just order it online and look for anything else that might be needed to get free shipping if necessary.

I had an egg crate last year and it was really nice in the beginning, but college kids basically live in three places: either they’re in class, the library/study lounge, and if they arn’t in those places, they’re in their bed. Others are in their bed. It’s just a very well-traveled place, and thus the egg crate wears out rather quickly. By the end of the year, you could see a nice long indentation of wear my body has been. So, I suggest that if you’re going the egg crate route, definitely have your daughter/son rotate it every time they change their sheets. Flipping it over won’t work, it feels really weird, but they can try that. Also, remind them to flip their mattress if they can (rotate it 180 degrees, then flip it), although some mattresses you can only rotate, but it still prevents that ditch in your mattress where they sleep.
However, this year, i’m going the fiber/featherbed route. I’m cautious about the fiberbed simply because it might not be as comfy, but I may do that and an egg crate because it’d still cost less than the featherbed, and be super squishy. I’ll probably also get a cheap cheap matress pad/cover to hold it all in place, because the egg crate moves around a bit while sleeping. Plus, it all can easily be washed and stored, which will be super nice. And if I move up in beds during college (to a full or whatever) i’ll just put it all on my twin bed at home, it’ll just be a bit long.

Couple more suggestions:
Pillow: have your child test run pillows at the store before you buy them. My mom bought me a side-sleeper pillow from Target, but it totally sucked even though i’m a side sleeper. Lots of happy pillows=bed happiness, and it does make a huge difference in quality of sleep. Plus, extra pillows are great if friends stay over or if friends are simply hanging out.
comforter: twin x-longs are hard to find. I got a full and it works great because its long enough and although its a tad wider, its actually really nice because you can tuck more in under the bed, thus you won’t tear your bed apart as easily. It’s also fun in the fa//spring to take outside and lay out in the quad on when the weather’s nice, so its nice to have a big one.
Sheets: buy one set that your D/S likes. Then, if you’re planning to get a second, wait and see. I bought jersey/t-shirt knit sheets because I love them at home, but with no AC in the freshman dorms, I was sweltering in the heat, and comfortable in the winter, but edged on the hot side in the winter with the onslaught of the heat that had two settings: Sahara or off. So, this year i’m bringing a second set of regular sheets for the warm months.

Please forgive me, but what is an egg crate?

An “egg crate” is a foam type topper with various ridges in them. They’re very popular at summer camps.

What is a fiberbed?

Just got an XL egg crate from BBB & an mattress pad from Linens N Things. We did not go with the XL sheets or comforter (DD does not sleep inside her bed, except if it’s 20 below).

Both the LNT stores in our area were just putting out the dorm stuff this week. BBB has had theirs out for a couple of weeks, but they had plenty of stuff left.
